Pollino: Hiking trails to the chapel and belvedere
Accommodation in Pollino
Pollino is both a destination and a starting point on the routes described. Waypoints range from the Cappella di San Giuseppe and the Belvedere di Pollino to the Lucra mountain pasture and Manegra; other routes lead into the hamlet. When choosing a route, you can first decide whether you want to head to Pollino or set out from there for another destination. Each time estimate applies to a specific route and its stated destination.
The Volon Trail loop
The Volon Trail Premeno is a 13.5-kilometer loop with 645 meters of positive elevation gain. Pollino is the last hamlet the loop reaches; a second refreshment station is set up there. The kilometer figure describes the length of the entire loop, and the elevation figure indicates the positive elevation gain. These are two distinct details about the loop, while the other routes are described by the time it takes to reach individual destinations.
Trails to the chapel, mountain pasture, and viewpoint
A mountain trail from Pollino reaches the small Cappella di San Giuseppe in 20 minutes. Along the way, there are views over the central part of Lake Maggiore and its Lombard shore. A meadow path leads to the Belvedere di Pollino, which overlooks Lake Maggiore, in 20 minutes. Views of the lake and shore depend on the weather. Both trails are listed as taking 20 minutes, but they lead to different destinations: one leads to the small chapel and offers views along the way, while the other leads to the named belvedere. Another route leads from Pollino to the Lucra mountain pasture and continues to Manegra; the stated time to Manegra is one hour. The two destinations listed as taking 20 minutes therefore contrast with the route for which one hour is given to reach Manegra.
Trails to Pollino
Two trails lead to Pollino: one starts at Via Perelli Paradisi in Premeno, and the other goes via the Bagno mountain pasture. From Via Perelli Paradisi, the Pianezza Grande trail reaches the hamlet of Pollino in 40 minutes. Near the cemetery, a trail branches off Via per Pollino and leads to Pollino via the Bagno mountain pasture in 20 minutes. The starting points and time estimates differ: Pianezza Grande starts at Via Perelli Paradisi, while the trail via Bagno starts at Via per Pollino, near the cemetery. This makes it possible to match each duration to its stated starting point.
Mountain biking in Pollino
A CAI mountain bike route reaches Pollino and continues past the soccer field to the Belvedere di Pollino. A CAI route report dated March 22, 2022, describes this itinerary. The Belvedere is therefore the destination of both a meadow path and the mountain bike route via the soccer field. The routes differ in activity and in the additional waypoint named. Trail conditions may change; this also applies to possible local restrictions on the mountain bike route. Check both before your trip.
