Carmine Superiore combines its location on a rocky outcrop above Lake Maggiore with the church of San Gottardo. When planning your trip, the different walking routes and the historic details of the Romanesque church are of particular interest.

Scenery on Lake Maggiore

Carmine Superiore lies on a rocky outcrop above the western shore of Lake Maggiore and offers panoramic views across the lake to the Lombard mountains. The view therefore takes in both water and mountain scenery; the elevated location shapes the landscape. A different perspective can be found in a stretch of woodland towards Cannero: from the path, you can look down on the ruins of the Castles of Malaga. These are two distinct landscape impressions: the sweeping panorama over the lake and mountains, and the view from above of the Malaga ruins.

Walking to Carmine Superiore

Carmine Superiore can only be reached on foot. From Carmine Inferiore, a path leads uphill and takes about 15 minutes; longer hiking trails come from Cannero or Cannobio, including the Via delle Genti. The estimate of about 15 minutes applies to the route from Carmine Inferiore. When choosing your starting point, it is therefore important to consider whether you plan to take this shorter approach or one of the longer hiking trails from Cannero or Cannobio.

The Sentiero 5 leads from Cannobio via the Via delle Genti to Carmine Superiore, then continues to Cannero and its castles. Carmine Superiore is therefore a stop along this route; the order of the places helps you understand the trail as a connection between several stops. By contrast, the estimate of about 15 minutes refers to access from Carmine Inferiore. When planning, you can decide whether Carmine is your destination on the shorter approach or a stop along a longer route.

The start of Percorso n° 2 is on State Road 34 near Carmine Inferiore, at an elevation of approximately 205 m. It begins at a staircase near the first bend south of the road maintenance depot in the hamlet of Carmine Inferiore. The road, staircase, and depot are specific landmarks; the elevation is approximate.

San Gottardo: Architecture and Frescoes

The church of San Gottardo is Romanesque and dates to the 14th century; it was completed in 1401. It consists of two sections at different levels, connected by a few steps. The change in elevation and the steps connecting the sections define its articulated form.

The frescoes include Christ blessing in a mandorla, accompanied by the symbols of the Evangelists. Other scenes depict stories of Saint Gottardo and Saint Bartholomew.

The restorations belong to a much later period in the church's history: work carried out in 1932–1933 and from 1997 to 2002 helped restore the fresco cycles.

Feast of Saint Gottardo

The feast of Saint Gottardo is celebrated in Carmine Superiore on the first Sunday in May. If you are planning your trip specifically around this occasion, check the latest event dates before you leave.
