Pallanza on Lake Maggiore combines lake views with a rich architectural and artistic history. The historic center dates back to Roman times; along the shore and among the historic buildings, you’ll encounter churches, monuments and gardens. If you’re considering Pallanza as a travel destination, these varied highlights offer practical starting points for planning your trip.

Lakeside Views and Architecture

The Lungolago di Pallanza promenade offers views of Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Gulf. Its surroundings are lined with historic buildings, churches, monuments and gardens. The promenade thus combines views across the water with a succession of built and landscaped features along the shore.

Villa Giulia also overlooks the Borromean Gulf and the port of Pallanza. Its lake-facing design is neoclassical, with loggias and columns shaping its architecture. The Centro Eventi Il Maggiore offers another perspective, with a natural outdoor arena providing sweeping views of Lake Maggiore and the surrounding landscape.

The lakeside walking route from Suna to Intra runs along Lake Maggiore and reaches Pallanza. A shared-use cycling and walking path begins there, near Villa Giulia’s public park. When planning your trip, you can therefore take into account both the lakeside promenade and a described route that includes Pallanza as one of its points.

Historic Center and Churches

The palaces in the historic center are adorned with portals, arcades, archivolts and capitals. These terms draw attention to different façade details: a portal frames an entrance, arcades form a series of arches, archivolts follow the curves of an opening, and capitals provide ornamented tops to columns or pillars. Together, these features give the architecture of the center a distinctive profile.

The churches also reflect different periods and architectural styles. The Parrocchiale di Santo Stefano dates from the Romanesque period, more precisely from the second half of the 12th century; it was extensively restored and remodeled in the 17th century. Madonna di Campagna is a three-aisled Renaissance church from the first half of the 16th century and was declared a national monument. Another notable landmark is the 65-meter-high bell tower of the Collegiata di San Leonardo, completed in 1689 with a dome and lantern. Their architectural forms, dates and tower height offer different ways to explore Pallanza’s religious architecture.

Art Collection and Museum History

The Museo del Paesaggio is located in Palazzo Viani Dugnani, a Baroque building from the second half of the 17th century. It houses the most important art collection on Lake Maggiore. The sculpture collection includes more than 300 works by Paolo Troubetzkoy, mostly plaster works, as well as 53 works by Arturo Martini. The artists’ names and the note about materials offer a concrete way to explore the different groups of works.

In 1909, Antonio Massara and the intermunicipal association “Pro Verbano” founded the Museo Storico Artistico del Verbano e delle Valli adiacenti in Pallanza.
