Cannero Riviera: Citrus Gardens, History and Trails
Accommodation in Cannero Riviera
When planning a trip to Cannero Riviera, you can focus on cultural history, trails, plants and time at the beach. The town lies on a small alluvial plain, formed over time by deposits carried by the Cannero River during floods. Mild summers and winters support a wide variety of vegetation: lime trees, lemons, olives, oranges, palms, azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias thrive here.
Citrus Gardens and the Beach
Parco degli Agrumi features impressive terraces and a variety of plants, with more than 17 varieties. Guided tours are available in summer by reservation. This lets you combine a visit to the park with a glimpse of the citrus-growing tradition that gives the town’s plant life its distinctive character.
Cannero Riviera’s Lido is set in a natural bay. It has a large, well-equipped sandy beach that is also accessible to wheelchair users and parents with strollers. The terraces of Parco degli Agrumi and the beach offer different ways to plan your trip: plants and gardens on one hand, and time by the water on the other.
Local Sights and History
The Museo Etnografico e della Spazzola explores traditional activities and trades, including woodworking, ironworking, farming, livestock raising and fishing. Industrial brush manufacturing shaped Cannero’s economy in the first half of the 20th century.
Donego is home to stone houses with a medieval feel. Narrow lanes lead to a cluster of inner courtyards, and the small Church of San Giovanni Battista dates back to the 16th century. An easy mule track connects Cannero with Donego; the walk takes about 20 minutes. This gives you a specific estimate to consider when including the village in your plans.
The area also has a military history. The Cadorna Line was built in 1916 as a defensive system of roads and fortifications. From Cannero, you can walk to the gun emplacements on Monte Morissolo, which stands at an elevation of 1,311 metres.
Trails and Connections
A mostly scenic and easy trail passes through the districts of Ronché, Donego and Cassino. Only a few short climbs and descents are more demanding. Cannero Riviera is also one of the municipalities involved in initiatives for the Via GeoAlpina hiking project.
On the Via delle Genti from Cannobio to Cannero Riviera, you’ll reach the small harbour, the lakeside promenade and the landing stage. From there, you can take a boat back; check the latest timetables. In the summer 2026 timetable, Navigazione Laghi operated the Cannero–Luino–Cannobio boat service on lines 71, 72, 73, 88, 89, 90 and 91. Lines and timetables may change, so it’s a good idea to check the latest connections before travelling.
Annual Events
The Mostra sugli Agrumi di Cannero takes place every year in March. A popular festival is held annually on the first Sunday in May at the Chapel of S. Giuseppe on the mule track from Cannero to Oggiogno. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates in advance. You can then choose your travel dates to suit the occasion and decide whether cultural history, trails or the beach is your main focus.
