Miazzina: Church Art, History and Mountain Panorama
Accommodation in Miazzina
Miazzina is known for its panoramic views and is therefore called “il balcone sul Lago Maggiore” (the balcony over Lake Maggiore). The paths also offer panoramic views over Lake Maggiore, Cusio and Val Grande. Tourism has also been present in Miazzina for more than a century. The landscape and local history give the destination different facets.
A circular route through mountain meadows and chestnut forest
An easy, 7-kilometre circular route from Miazzina explores the mountain meadows of Motta d’Aurelio and leads through chestnut forests to Alpe Aurelio. The Motta d’Aurelio circular route connects mountain paths with chapels and distinctive rural buildings. Along the way, you will also find engraved and cup-marked boulders. The route thus brings together impressions of the landscape and evidence of local culture. Views over Lake Maggiore, Cusio and Val Grande add a broad perspective to the features of the route.
Districts, church and organ
The historic districts “log dent” and “log là ” were once independent of one another and meet at the Chiesa di S. Lucia. The church was elevated to parish church status in 1618. Above its entrance portal is an organ built by Angelo Cavalli of Lodi in 1870. It is considered the only organ in the Provincia Verbano-Cusio-Ossola originating entirely from the 19th century. The history of the districts, the church’s elevation to parish status and the precisely dated instrument offer different ways to explore local history.
Remembrance and art
The names of 349 fallen soldiers from the 1915–1918 war, 47 fallen soldiers from the 1935–1936 war and the African War, and 295 fallen soldiers from the Second World War are inscribed at the Memoriale degli Alpini in Colletta. The memorial is situated behind a panoramic balcony overlooking the lakes. A ceremony is held each year at the Memoriale degli Alpini in the hills above Verbano. The Alpini commemorative ceremony at the Memoriale di Pala takes place on the first Sunday in June.
The painter Achille Tominetti is also part of Miazzina’s cultural heritage. A 19th-century painter associated with Divisionism, he died in 1917 at his home in Miazzina. Many of his paintings depict recognizable views of the village as well as scenes of peasant and pastoral life. A monument to Tominetti stands near the parish church. His subjects bring together landscape and rural life, while the monument provides a distinct point of reference in the village.
Farming culture and feast days
The private Cà dal fumm museum is furnished with objects from Miazzina’s traditional material farming culture. The small room at Baita Fumo preserves old objects, including agricultural tools and kitchen, spinning and other implements. Miazzina’s traditional women’s clothing includes a Florentine straw hat decorated with chenille and dried flowers. These details offer a glimpse into different aspects of rural daily life and local clothing traditions.
The recurring feast days are spread throughout the year: the feast of S. Ulderico takes place in Miazzina on the second Sunday in August, and the parish feast of S. Lucia is held on 13 December. Together with the Alpini commemorative ceremony on the first Sunday in June, they make up three specifically dated occasions to bear in mind when planning your trip.
Miazzina offers different reasons to choose it as a destination: the circular route showcases the landscape and path culture, while the church, commemorations and Tominetti’s works offer further historical and artistic perspectives.
