Mergozzo combines Lake Mergozzo with historic sites and trails for different ability levels. Three themes are especially useful when planning your trip: swimming in the lake, cultural landmarks, and routes ranging from the easy Itinerario 4 to the challenging Via Ferrata Montorfano.

By the lake: swimming and townscape

Lake Mergozzo has many beaches suitable for swimming. Its water is among the clearest in Italy. Along the shore in Mergozzo, the houses of the “Riva” district are arranged in an amphitheatre.

Trails with different levels of difficulty

The municipal Itinerario 4 leads from Bracchio to the megalithic complex “Cà d’la Norma”. This easy archaeological and nature trail is 3 km long; the stated walking time is 1 hour and 15 minutes, with 30 m of ascent and descent. The municipality recommends the trail in every season, although trail conditions may vary.

The Via Ferrata Montorfano is considerably more challenging: it is classified D – difficult – and has very exposed sections. A good head for heights and a via ferrata set are essential; check the technical conditions and safety requirements before setting out. From the lakeshore in Mergozzo, you can start the approach via Sentiero A58; it takes about an hour to reach the via ferrata.

When comparing times, it is important to distinguish between them: the 1 hour and 15 minutes for Itinerario 4 is the walking time for the trail. By contrast, the approximate hour for the Via Ferrata refers only to the approach, not to the via ferrata route itself.

Churches, villages and museums

The Chiesa Parrocchiale della Beata Vergine Assunta was consecrated in 1610 on the site of an existing Romanesque church. The predecessor church is documented in a record from 1133; the two dates therefore refer to different periods in the town’s history.

The thirteen Cappelle della Via Crucis were built in 1821 and restored between 2002 and 2005. Their original 18th-century colours were revealed during the restoration. In the old village of Sasso, the houses cluster around a building dating from the communal period, known as the “Castello”.
