Ornavasso: Marble, Archaeology and Hotels
Accommodation in Ornavasso
Ornavasso offers several distinct points of interest for travelers interested in the history of marble, archaeology and a historically themed trail. If you are looking for a hotel in Ornavasso, you can plan your stay around these themes: a guided tour leads underground, archaeological finds take center stage at the Museo del Paesaggio, and the Ornavasso e la Linea Cadorna trail explores a defensive system from the First World War. The Santuario della Madonna del Boden adds a distinctive connection to the landscape.
Marble underground and its history
A guided tour of the Cava di marmo Ornavasso takes you through two underground levels of tunnels, connected by a karst shaft with stairs. The tour lasts about 60 minutes in total. This makes it easy to factor into your day’s plans; the duration refers to the tour as a whole. From the 1380s onward, the marble vein in Ornavasso’s ancient marble quarry supplied marble for the construction of Milan Cathedral. In Ornavasso, the layout of the quarry and the historical use of its marble in an important building thus have an interesting connection.
The trail and the Linea Cadorna
The Ornavasso e la Linea Cadorna trail focuses on the Linea Cadorna defensive system, which dates from the First World War. It comprised a complex network of roads, trenches, communication trenches and galleries. The structures were cleaned and made accessible thanks to the efforts of the Gruppo Alpini di Ornavasso. The trail also runs along the rock faces of the Ornavasso climbing wall. Its features therefore link military history sites with a specific route along the rock faces.
Archaeological finds and necropolises
The archaeological collection of the Museo del Paesaggio is housed in its branch at the Palazzo Comunale in Ornavasso. It includes more than 1,500 surviving objects, including grave goods from Ornavasso that offer insights into the development of a small Lepontian community. An audio guide is available for visitors to the Sezione Archeologica “Enrico Bianchetti” and can be activated on site using a QR code.
The history of the discoveries can also be placed in context: Enrico Bianchetti discovered the Ornavasso necropolis in 1890. Excavations from 1890 to 1893 uncovered two separate necropolises at San Bernardo and In Persona. The two sites also differ in the number of graves: San Bernardo has 181 graves, while In Persona has 165. San Bernardo therefore has 16 more graves. Together with the grave goods and the Lepontian collection, these sites offer different insights into the area’s archaeological history.
The Santuario della Madonna del Boden
The Santuario della Madonna del Boden stands at an elevation of 475 meters in a commanding position above Ornavasso and the Toce plain. It sits on a level area surrounded by dense chestnut woods. The elevated position and the level area describe two distinct aspects of the same place. If you would like to include the landscape in your interests alongside marble and archaeology, the sanctuary offers a striking landmark above the town.
