Crevoladossola combines a distinctive landscape with sacred architecture, traces of local culture, and trails with varied profiles. When planning your stay, it helps to consider specific starting points and visitor conditions separately.

Landscape and the Local History of Stone

The municipality of Crevoladossola extends across the Pennine and Lepontine Alps. Between them lies the postglacial Sempione Gorge, carved out by the Diveria. The landscape description therefore encompasses both mountain areas and a clearly identified gorge. The Dolomia Bianca di Crevola offers a different perspective on regional history: the stone has been quarried since Roman times and has been regarded for centuries as a distinctive feature of the Ossola Valley. These two time references describe different aspects—the stone’s long history of quarrying and its regional significance, which has grown over the centuries.

Sacred Architecture and Traces in Simbo

The parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo stands in a secluded location on a rocky spur and is considered an important artistic monument. The Museum of Sacred Architecture explains the historical and artistic development of sacred architecture in the Ossola Valley and provides further insight into the parish church in Crevoladossola. The church and museum thus offer different perspectives on the subject: one focuses on the specific building in its distinctive setting, while the other explores sacred architecture in its regional context. The museum is open only by prior reservation; take this into account when planning your visit.

In the hamlet of Simbo, some frescoes, a mill, the remains of an old communal oven, and defensive loopholes in the façades of residential buildings have been preserved. These traces include murals, relics of communal use, and architectural details on homes. Together, they show aspects of local cultural history that differ from the sacred architecture of the church and museum.

Walking Trails with Different Starting Points

The Via Romana walking trail starts at Lago Tana di Crevoladossola, described as a small, precious oasis. By contrast, the starting point for the Crevoladossola–Baceno section of the Via del Gries is Piazza Municipio. This section is of moderate difficulty and follows historic mule tracks, a stretch of gravel road beyond Pontemaglio, and village streets within the hamlets. The different starting points help with orientation: Lago Tana is the reference point for the Via Romana, while Piazza Municipio is the starting point for the Via del Gries; information on difficulty and trail surface is also provided for the Gries section.

Piazza Municipio is served by the Domodossola–Formazza bus route. If you plan to use this starting point for an excursion, check the bus timetable in advance. This lets you factor the journey into your plans without confusing the different trail starting points.

Cycling and Walking Route Along the Toce

The Ciclovia del Toce offers another way to orient yourself along the routes. In Crevoladossola, it runs alongside the Oasi di Preglia, then continues along a combined cycling and walking path to the bridge over the Torrente Diveria. Unlike the Via del Gries section, its defining features are its connection with the Oasi and the combined path leading to the bridge. Including these routes in your travel plans makes it possible to distinguish between a described walking route with a stated difficulty level and a route that follows a cycling and walking path.

Villa Renzi and the Koyamaki

In the park of Villa Renzi in Preglia, the Japanese umbrella pine Koyamaki (Sciadopitys verticillata) is designated as a monumental plant. As of August 30, 2026, the park was not open to the public because of renovation work. Check the current status before planning a visit; this visitor information is just as important to your plans as your botanical interest in the plant.
