San Bernardino Verbano: Nature Trails and Local History
Accommodation in San Bernardino Verbano
San Bernardino Verbano brings together nature and culture: a large part of the area lies within Val Grande National Park. At the same time, rural buildings shape its alpine pastures and historic village centers. When looking for a hotel, you might consider whether you want your trip to focus mainly on trails through woodland, historic buildings, or both.
Nature Trails and Landscapes
The Corte Buè da Ompio route passes through extensive beech forests and stands of birch, which are reclaiming abandoned pastures. Forest and former pastureland are therefore part of a landscape in which vegetation is changing across the abandoned areas. The route description thus draws attention not only to the trail itself, but also to the interplay of beech trees, birches, and former pastures.
The “L'uomo-albero” nature trail runs from Ompio to the summit of Monte Faiè. It includes nine information panels and 20 numbered observation markers: alongside the information panels, clearly marked observation points are also an explicit part of the trail. The national park currently lists the trail as open and recommends visiting from April to November. Check the latest park information before planning your trip.
For the Via Ferrata Selvaggio Verde, its status is essential for planning: the national park currently lists the route as closed because of a fire. It is 11 km long, has an elevation gain of 417 m, and connects In la Piana along the gorge of the Rio Val Grande with Ponte Velina. Bear the closure in mind when choosing your routes, and check the park's current status.
Mule Tracks and Historic Buildings
The built landscape also tells the story of the municipality's places and routes. Dry-stone walls support mule tracks in the mountain hamlets; rural buildings shape the alpine pastures and historic village centers. Paths and buildings are therefore equally visible elements of the landscape.
In Bieno stands the 18th-century Chiesa Parrocchiale della Purificazione di Maria, built over an earlier Romanesque church. A Roman-era inscribed plaque is set into its façade. The Romanesque bell tower is also part of the building; typologically, it is considered unique in the area. Several historical periods thus come together at the church: the earlier Romanesque church, the 18th-century building, and the Roman inscribed plaque.
The Santuario della Madonna del Patrocinio, also known as Santa Maria del Calcare, lies along the old mule track that led from Bieno and Santino to the alpine pastures of Ompio. The sanctuary was built in the early 18th century. Santa Maria del Calcare refers to the same building and is another name you may encounter when finding your way around the historic sites.
In Rovegro, the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Gaudenzio dates from the 16th or 17th century; it was renovated and enlarged in the 19th century. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Sant'Antonio Abate is the only three-aisled church in the area. In Bieno, the rural Oratorio di Sant'Antonio da Padova adds to the village landscape; it dates from the late 17th or early 18th century. Rovegro is also home to a house known as the “casa del castellano,” dating from 1553. These different buildings offer several specific points of reference if you want to explore the history of the hamlets.
A bridge known as the “ponte romano” crosses the San Bernardino stream on the mule track between Rovegro and Cossogno. Its name and location on the old route make the bridge another named landmark in the area's history of routes and buildings.
