For planning a trip around Scareno, trails to Alpe Piaggia, historic sites, and recurring festivals offer concrete points of reference. The out-and-back route from Scareno to Alpe Piaggia is listed as route R11 in a 2023 CAI program. The landscape, trail markers, and buildings each offer a different focus—useful when choosing a hotel based on the themes of your trip.

Hiking trails and landscape around Alpe Piaggia

The Giir di Curt di Scareno follows a steady series of switchbacks through ancient chestnut woods up to Alpe Piaggia. The hiking route passes through the alpine farmsteads known as “Curt.” Both the farmsteads and the bends in the trail, along with the woods, shape the route described here. A centuries-old chestnut wood stretches on both sides of the trail between Ponte del Dragone and Alpe Piaggia. The bridge lies roughly halfway between Scareno and Alpe Piaggia, providing a landmark along the way. Alpe Piaggia is also a starting point for climbs to the summits of Monte Zeda and Marona. Check current trail conditions before setting out; seasonal conditions can vary.

The Pian Vadà bivouac is also mentioned in connection with access from Scareno: a 2009 program by Parco Nazionale Val Grande described this access route. For a visit today, confirm access and the key arrangements separately. In 2013, a guided park program followed the trail from Scareno to Ponte del Dragone to share information about gold prospectors in Val Grande. This is a past event date, not a current indication that a guided tour is available.

Churches, buildings, and remembrance

The Chiesa di San Michele in Scareno was built in the 18th century and later expanded and adorned. Its interior is finely decorated and has a vaulted ceiling. An old house in Scareno retains its original construction, with exposed stone pillars and chestnut-wood loggias. At Alpe Piaggia, the Oratorio della Madonna del Rosario has preserved its original architecture almost unchanged.

On the uphill trail from Scareno, shortly before Alpe Piaggia, a small monument with an iron cross commemorates the partisans who fell on June 16, 1944. The ossuary near Scareno was built between 1945 and 1946 and preserves the remains of several partisans from the Cesare Battisti Brigade. These two memorial sites relate to different episodes in the area’s history. Ponte del Dragone is also associated with a story about gold mining: according to local lore, the name comes from a family that held the mining rights to a small gold mine in the 17th century. The origin of the name is considered uncertain.

Festivals and recurring dates

In Scareno, Madonna del Carmine is celebrated on the third Sunday in July; the feast of San Michele falls on the first Sunday in October. The traditional festival at Alpe Piaggia takes place every year on the second Sunday in July. The three dates therefore fall on different Sundays and each relates to a different festival location. If you would like to plan your trip around a celebration, check the specific dates before you travel.

Trails and landscape between Scareno and Aurano

The Sentiero del Patrimonio di Aurano has Aurano and Scareno as its starting and return points. A mule track also connects the two villages and passes by Vallone dei Mulinasch. Separately, the landscape of Rio Scarnasca can be described as follows: the valley lies between Aurano and Scareno, with numerous farmsteads and scattered buildings on the slope above. These trail and landscape details offer different regional points of reference without combining them into a single route.

For a break before or after an outing, Circolo di Scareno serves lunch, dinner, and light meals. Together with the historic buildings, chestnut woods, and festivals, this gives a varied picture of the interests a trip around Scareno can offer. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether hiking trails, local history, or a particular festival date is most important for your stay.
