If you take historic buildings and regional products into account when choosing a destination, Refrancore offers several concrete points of interest. The first documented mention of the fortified settlement dates back to 1197; later, the Ricetto complex and buildings such as the San Sebastiano bell tower were constructed. Finocchini, biscuits flavored with fennel seeds, are also part of the town’s culinary identity. Refrancore thus brings together medieval history, religious architecture and regional specialties.

Medieval Fortifications and Local History

The first documented mention of the fortified settlement of Rivo franchoris in Refrancore dates to December 1197. It provides a specific chronological reference point for the town’s history. The fortified Ricetto complex dates from the early 15th century; its still largely visible structures form a site measuring about 65 × 40 meters. These approximate dimensions give a tangible sense of the fortification’s scale. Refrancore’s history can therefore be explored both through an early-dated written record and through the later-dated, still largely visible fortified complex.

An illustration in the Codex Astensis shows Refrancore’s medieval castle as a small, square fortified structure with high, crenellated walls and two towers. The image offers another way to explore the town’s medieval architectural history, illustrating not only its basic form but also its distinctive architectural features.

Bell Tower and Churches

The freestanding San Sebastiano bell tower is an 18th-century structure and stands more than 20 meters tall. It is the only surviving remnant of the demolished rural church of San Sebastiano. The building’s significance therefore lies not only in its height, but also in its role as a surviving testament to the former church. Here, a single tower remains, while the structures of a fortified complex are still largely visible at the Ricetto.

At the church of Santa Maria Maddalena, an architectural detail takes center stage: it was restored in 2000, making it possible to admire the fine lines of its apse in full. Unlike the freestanding bell tower, the church draws attention to the design of a specific architectural feature.

Finocchini and Culinary Connections

Finocchini are rectangular biscuits flavored with fennel seeds and made year-round. Their production area includes Asti and the Turin area; the most famous examples come from Refrancore in the province of Asti. The biscuits thus combine regional distribution with a particular association with Refrancore. If you are considering local products as part of your trip, they offer a concrete point of reference for the town’s culinary side.

Another culinary connection is the Sagra del Faseu Bon del Francù di Refrancore. On a page published in March 2026, UNPLI Piemonte listed it as having received the “Sagra di Qualità” quality seal. A year-round baked product and an award-winning food event thus represent two distinct local attractions.
