Ozzano Monferrato combines architectural history with traces of the lime and cement industry. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, the focus of your trip can guide your plans: architecture and sacred art are themes in their own right, as is the history of industrial lime and cement production. You can decide in advance which of these aspects you would particularly like to explore.

The Castle and Historic Architecture

The origins of the Castello di Ozzano Monferrato are probably linked to the period of castle building around the year 1000. The oldest visible section, however, dates from the 15th century and consists of a brick wall topped with three forked merlons. The hanging gardens on the east side are more recent and date from the 19th century. The castle brings together different periods, from a possible early phase of construction to clearly dated architectural features and gardens.

The bell tower of Ozzano Monferrato is a freestanding brick structure about 20 metres high, with a square ground plan, leaning against a tuff wall. The historical and art-historical route also passes preserved traces of the Renaissance walls, whose brickwork features stepped decorations. The route also includes the only surviving defensive tower in Ozzano Monferrato.

Churches and Local Culture

The present-day structure of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 18th century. Its interior contains mostly 17th- and 18th-century altarpieces. The parish church of San Salvatore preserves fragments of frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries, some of which are attributed to Spanzotti’s workshop. The relevant heritage authority has recognised San Salvatore as an important work of art.

Casa Bonaria-Simonetti is also part of the town’s architectural heritage: the building is a rare example of a late Gothic house. Alongside such buildings, Chiacchierino, also known as frivolité, points to a local artistic tradition. This traditional form of lace-making is done with a shuttle and has a well-established tradition in Ozzano Monferrato.

Traces of the Lime and Cement Industry

Architectural and technical traces of Ozzano Monferrato’s lime and cement industry are concentrated in the Valle del Rio Fontanola, where the industry developed between the 19th and 20th centuries. Valle Fontanola is an area of industrial archaeology related to cement production and a place where you can discover this history. The valleys and their industrial remains offer a distinct perspective on the town’s history, alongside its churches and historic residential and defensive buildings.

One specific example is the former Milanese e Azzi plant. Built in 1894, it has six vertical masonry kilns, arranged in a group of four and a group of two. MiCeM presents the geological and industrial origins of lime and cement production in the Monferrato Casalese. Its exhibition space covers about 250 square metres.
