Explore Grognardo through several specific interests: the castle ruins, a marked trail with geological outcrops, historic churches and art, and excursions into the forests. When choosing a hotel, it helps to consider the purpose of your trip alongside how you will get there. The town’s history spans several centuries; road routes and Visone railway station offer practical guidance for planning.

Castle and marked trail

The ruins of Grognardo Castle date back to the 13th century and overlook the town of the same name. A marked trail leads from the town up to the castle. Along the way, you can observe outcrops of three different types of rock in succession. The route therefore offers two distinct perspectives: the castle points to the town’s history, while the rock outcrops bring the underlying geology into view. The change between the three rock types also makes the trail itself interesting; geological observation is not merely an add-on to the destination.

Palazzo and Chiesa di S. Felice

Palazzo Beccaria Incisa is a 16th-century aristocratic residence. The palazzo houses a 17th-century painting from the Piedmontese school. It depicts a mounted man leading armed troops. The building and the painting thus represent different centuries, while the image focuses on a specific scene. Those interested in art and history will find a different way to explore the town’s past here than at the castle.

Chiesa di S. Felice adds an ecclesiastical tradition to these historic connections. It is considered a Pieve dating back a thousand years. Its past ownership history includes first the monks of S. Pietro di Acqui Terme and later the Beccaria noble family, subsequently known as Beccaro. The palazzo foregrounds the aristocratic residence and its painting, while S. Felice is distinguished by its status as a Pieve and a changing sequence of historical ownership.

Local history and remembrance

The settlement pattern around the fortified castle is also part of Grognardo’s history. According to historical accounts, in the 16th century it was characterized by houses built close together and three gates. The gates helped defend the town and its residents in times of danger. This describes not only individual structures but also their role in the settlement as a whole.

Another period in the town’s history concerns the Urman family. After 8 September 1943 and the German occupation during the Second World War, the Jewish Genoese couple in the Urman family found refuge in Grognardo. On 16 January 1979, Francesco and Elsa Garofalo received the “Righteous Among the Nations” award from Yad Vashem in Jerusalem for helping the Urman family. The refuge belongs to the wartime period; the award followed in 1979. The two events can therefore be distinguished chronologically without losing sight of their connection.
