Portocannone combines historic architecture and local history with an annual event and summer theatre and music performances. The Palazzo Baronale and the traditional dish “Bakalla i rakanuot” offer further specific points of interest for your stay.

Local History and Palazzo Baronale

The people of Portocannone have Albanian origins. The town’s history also includes the Latin settlement, which was destroyed by a major earthquake in 1456. A later architectural landmark is the Palazzo Baronale, built by Baron Carlo Diego Cinni between 1735 and 1742. The two events are separated in time: 1456 marks the destruction of the settlement, while 1735 to 1742 marks the construction of the Palazzo.

The first floor contains numerous rooms with frescoes and furnishings from past eras. The architecture also includes a projecting portico and a loggia on the east side, opening onto a garden. The interiors and exterior offer two different perspectives on the Palazzo: frescoes and furnishings define the rooms on the first floor, while the portico and loggia provide its architectural accents.

Carrese: An Event Around Pentecost

The Carrese is a clearly scheduled event to consider when planning your trip. It takes place every year on the Monday after Pentecost. The Giovani and the Giovanotti compete in the Carrese. The competition is won by the cart that first passes through the finish-line gateway at Borgo Costantinopoli. The following day, the winning cart carries the statue of the Madonna di Costantinopoli in a procession. The competition and procession therefore take place on two consecutive days. If you would like to include both in your travel plans, allow for Pentecost Monday and the following day. Check the exact event dates for the relevant year before setting your travel dates.

Summer Programme and Getting There

The amphitheatre also offers a seasonal attraction: theatre and music performances take place there in summer. The programme may vary. Unlike the Carrese, which is tied to the Monday after Pentecost, the summer programme is a seasonal marker. If these events are a reason for your trip, check the dates for your planned stay.
