Tavenna brings together sacred architecture, recurring festivals and a landscape offering views in several directions. This means you can explore the area from different perspectives as you plan your trip: through its architectural history, by choosing a festival date, or by taking in the landscape.

Views and Local History

From Tavenna, views extend north to the mountains of the Maiella and Gran Sasso, south to Gargano, east to the Adriatic Sea and the Tremiti Islands, and west to the inner Apennines of Molise. The panorama therefore takes in coastal and mountain landscapes in different directions. Oak, olive, almond, walnut and fig trees, along with dense broom shrubs, shape the landscape in the area.

The town’s history also reaches far back: Tavenna’s origins date to the Aragonese period. At that time, a Slavic colony joined with the local population and founded the town. This historical development adds another perspective on Tavenna’s past to the story of its churches.

Churches with Different Traces of Time

Santa Maria di Costantinopoli

At the Chiesa parrocchiale di Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, dated records are accompanied by precise building measurements. The foundation stone was blessed and laid on 28 May 1770; an inscription on the lintel records the year 1773. The church has a single nave and measures 39.70 metres long and 9.80 metres wide. It is 11.40 metres high, excluding the dome. These measurements give a sense of the building’s proportions.

Another historical clue came to light during the installation of underfloor heating: radiant panels laid beneath the floor were part of the work during which an older floor with a mosaic pattern was uncovered. The discovery was therefore connected to the heating installation.

Maria SS. Incoronata and Montelateglia

The Chiesa Maria SS. Incoronata probably dates to around 1670. Near the main altar stands a statue of Maria Santissima Incoronata dagli Angeli; the niche is decorated with painted and gilded woodcarvings. Two side altars are dedicated to San Luca and San Vito and are adorned with stucco and carved wood. While the approximate date of this church is considered probable, Santa Maria di Costantinopoli has dated records in the form of the foundation stone ceremony in 1770 and the inscription from 1773.

The Chiesa di Montelateglia is considered very old; a Benedictine foundation is probable. On 23 October 1943, the German rearguard destroyed the church with explosives. After the end of the Second World War, it was rebuilt on the same site. Its history thus brings together a possible early foundation, wartime destruction and subsequent rebuilding.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The recurring Festa della Madonna di Montelateglia has two dates in the annual calendar. On 10 and 11 May, a statue is carried in procession from the rural church to Tavenna and then to the church in town. On the first Sunday in October, it returns to its church. The two parts of this tradition can thus be placed between spring and autumn.

The Festa di S. Antonio Abate also takes place every year, on 17 January. It includes a portrayal of a scene from the saint’s life, tastings of typical dishes, singing and folk dancing around fires. These fires are traditionally considered to bring good luck for the new season’s harvest. Unlike the procession, which has dates in May and October, this festival brings religious pageantry, food and dancing together on a January day.

The Mostra dell’artigianato has been held in several editions. Visitors can taste typical products and watch demonstrations by master craftspeople. If you want to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the specific event date in advance.
