Bojano combines medieval architecture, collections and practical ways to enjoy active days. This gives you a range of options when planning your trip: historic sites and museum collections, as well as hiking, cycling or a canoe trip.

Civita and the history of the county

Civita Superiore is an old village on a hill above Bojano. The remains of a medieval castle can be seen at the summit. The De Molisio family ruled the county from the castle of Civita. The well-preserved old village features atmospheric lanes between its buildings; the village layout and visible castle ruins offer different insights into the place. A marked hiking trail leads uphill from Bojano to Civita. The climb to the Civita acropolis takes you to the ruins of the Norman castle, another viewpoint. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Museum and cathedral

The Museo Civico in Palazzo Colagrossi displays vessels, jewellery, coins and weapons from the 5th to 4th century BC, found in the Bojano area. A separate palaeontological section presents fossils documenting life in the Tethys Sea, which once covered what is now the Matese area. Archaeological finds and fossils thus offer two distinct perspectives on the region: early human history and a much older natural history.

The Cathedral of San Bartolomeo offers another way to explore the history of architecture. Its features include Roman inscriptions, 9th-century plutei and sculpted panels from the 13th century. The pointed-arch portal and rose window also date from this period. The well-preserved crypt apse is dated to 1073. These dates reveal how the cathedral changed over several centuries. Admission is free.

The Matese area and nearby routes

The Eremo di Sant'Egidio is located in the Matese massif at an altitude of 1,025 metres. It comprises a church attached to accommodation described as a refuge. The hermitage is thought to date back to the 9th century; the Cistercians or the Templars are cited as possible founders. This historical attribution remains a conjecture. The Eremo offers a different focus from the museum and cathedral: here, the setting on the massif and the religious history of the building take centre stage.

Other local highlights

The Alifana area has small artificial lakes for sport fishing. In Bojano, meanwhile, dairies specialise in producing Fiordilatte mozzarella. These topics complement the area's cultural history with waterside recreation and a specific local food. They help you consider different interests for a trip to Bojano without losing sight of its historic sites and collections.
