Rotello: History, Olive Oil and Culture
Accommodation in Rotello
Rotello combines historic buildings with a strong olive oil tradition and cultural offerings. These different highlights can help you plan your trip: the town’s history is reflected in its palaces and churches, while oil tastings, traditional dishes and outdoor activities offer further ways to experience the town.
Architecture and History in Rotello
Palazzo Colavecchio dominates the historic center. Its history reflects a transformation: a defensive structure became a stately residence, surrounded by perimeter walls and featuring a small observation tower. The palazzo is currently inaccessible as a result of the earthquakes of October 2002. Its architectural history nevertheless remains a distinctive part of Rotello’s historical identity.
The Fontana Maggiore offers a different perspective. Made entirely of bronze, the fountain is about 3.50 meters high. Ceres, goddess of fields, the harvest and fertility, stands on its central pedestal. The statue symbolizes the great importance agriculture once had for local activities. In this way, the fountain connects a specific mythological figure with a subject of importance to Rotello.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli was built between 1728 and 1744, replacing an earlier church dedicated to the Annunciation. Its Baroque style is evident in its three naves and central dome. The church is open at any time during the day. The church of San Rocco also tells the story of a specific period in the town’s history: it was founded in 1648 as a votive church after the severe plague outbreak of 1646 to 1648. It was restored in 1913 and reopened for worship the following year.
Olive Oil and Local Cuisine
Several olive varieties are grown in Rotello. Their processing produces high-quality extra virgin olive oil, known and appreciated in the region and beyond for its organoleptic properties. The connection with olive oil is also reflected in tasting experiences and in an edition of the Sagra dell’Olio Novello scheduled for November 29, 2026. It combines tastings of freshly pressed extra virgin olive oil and traditional dishes with a fireworks display.
Traditional dishes associated with Rotello include fusilli a cappelletti, cacaurozze and fiadoni. Together with the olive oil, they offer a concrete impression of the role local produce and cuisine play in the town’s culinary identity. If you are interested in this aspect, both the dishes and the olive oil tradition offer their own points of interest for planning your trip.
Cultural Experiences and Walks
Il Giardino organizes artistic projects and cultural events. Its offerings also include experience tours with tastings of local products and workshops on making homemade pasta. Check the availability of these experiences for your travel dates before your trip.
Mappitella Picnic tra gli ulivi is a shared nature experience that includes a walk through a centuries-old olive grove. The picnic may be seasonal, so check in advance whether it is offered during your travel dates. There are also numerous opportunities for outdoor excursions and walks near the S. Andrea–Biferno branch of the Tratturo. This means you can consider cultural offerings, culinary experiences and outdoor activities as different highlights of your stay in Rotello.
