A stay in Cittiglio can be shaped around different interests, including cultural history, cycling and trekking. The town’s history comes to life at two churches and the Museo Alfredo Binda; for active days, the cycling route to Passo del Cuvignone and the 3V – Via Verde Varesina trekking trail network are relevant options. These different themes offer practical starting points for planning your trip.

Churches, Museum and Architectural History

The Museo Alfredo Binda was founded by the municipal administration in 1986. The Chiesa di San Biagio also offers a historical connection reaching far back in time: its earliest building dates from the 8th century AD. Guided tours of San Biagio are arranged in connection with events or at designated times. If you are planning a tour, check the scheduled dates.

The interior of the Chiesa di San Giulio preserves numerous 18th-century decorations as well as an old fresco from the 15th century. Here, then, you can encounter two distinct periods of sacred decoration. Together with the much older original structure of San Biagio, they provide a comparison of different historical traces in Cittiglio’s church history.

In Vararo, the Chiesa di San Bernardo has a rectangular floor plan, with a single-nave interior and a small semicircular apse. Its short bell tower houses the bells from the demolished Chiesa di San Giulio in Cittiglio. The history of the bells thus provides a tangible link between the building in Vararo and the former church in Cittiglio.

Cycling Route and Trail Network

The cycling route to Passo del Cuvignone starts in Cittiglio and ends at the pass. It is 9,260 metres long, with 793 metres of elevation gain and an average gradient of 8.56 percent. These figures describe different aspects of the route: its length, elevation gain and average gradient together give a more precise picture of its profile. The final climb offers distant views of the Alps and Lake Maggiore. Check current road conditions before setting out.

Cittiglio is also part of the 3V – Via Verde Varesina. This network of nature trails was created for trekking through the Province of Varese. Unlike the individual cycling route, which has a named start and finish, the 3V is centred on a network of trails. This distinction can help you keep the two options separate when planning: a ride to the pass or trekking on nature trails in the provincial network.

The Cascate di Cittiglio: Landscape and Access

The Cascate di Cittiglio comprise three waterfalls formed by the San Giulio stream. They lie in a wooded natural landscape at elevations between 324 and 474 metres above sea level. Access is an important consideration when planning a visit: according to the notice dated 18 March 2023 and last updated on 14 November 2025, Parco delle Cascate is closed until further notice. Access to all roads and paths on every slope around the park is prohibited, including unmarked ones. Check conditions before travelling.
