Brusimpiano: Lake, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Brusimpiano
Brusimpiano lies on the slopes of the Monti Derta and Castelletto, overlooking Lake Lugano. When planning a stay, you can choose from a range of themes: the green space by the lake, trails through the landscape, or heritage in the form of churches, chapels and traces of local work. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether the lakeshore, trails or local history should shape your stay.
Lakeshore and landscape
The municipal lido is a publicly accessible, equipped green space right by the lake. Facilities may vary by season. The Cascate del Trallo offer a different natural setting: after passing through a rock opening resembling a small cave, you reach the waterfall, which drops about 20 metres.
The landscape around Monte Derta also brings together nature and history. The Linea Cadorna runs over the mountain in Brusimpiano. The local section lets you walk through the communication trenches or galleries of the fortifications; from there, you can enjoy views over Lake Ceresio. Check local conditions before setting off.
Trails with different themes
The routes offer a variety of highlights. The Linea Cadorna focuses on fortifications and views over the lake. The Frontiera Nord has been enhanced with nature-education trails and routes. The Percorso Rodari leads to Ardena and features famous lines by Gianni Rodari about travel. The meditative Sentiero “L’arcobaleno dei colori” follows the course of the Trallo and passes visible remains of former mills. Local trail themes therefore range from military history and literature to traces of earlier work.
Churches, chapels and local history
The Chiesa Santa Maria Nascente preserves valuable original frescoes, including works from the school of Bernardino Luini. Its furnishings also include statues, marble works and paintings, as well as traditional furnishings and liturgical vestments. In the old town centre, sacred frescoes by local painters adorn several house walls, recalling the many natural disasters that have affected the town. San Martino is the oldest church in Brusimpiano. It stands outside the town, near the Borgo di Brusimpiccolo.
The Santuario della Madonna di Ardena, also known as Madonna del Latte, was built at the beginning of the 17th century. Towards the end of the same century, the Santuario della Madonna dell’Annunciazione e Caverna dell’Eremita, known as the Cappelletta, was built. A celebration of the Annunciation takes place there on the weekend around 25 March: on Saturday evening, a torchlight procession follows Via M. Bagattini to the chapel, and Mass is celebrated on Sunday.
The private Chiesa di Santa Rita has a matroneum, from which the former lords attended Mass. The Chiesa dell’Immacolata “Madonna dei Canicc” is used for services on 7 and 8 December. The celebration includes stalls selling traditional “Oss de Mort”. If you are planning a trip for these dates, check the latest information about the liturgical events.
Fishing, craftsmanship and getting there
The fish farm owned by the Municipality of Brusimpiano was built entirely by fishermen and completed in 1929. It was intended to allow valuable fish fry, such as char, trout and whitefish, to be released into Lake Ceresio. The Unione Pescatori del Ceresio offers angling tourism in Brusimpiano; check the participation requirements in advance. The town’s textile history is also part of its character: Ernesto Thomas founded the eponymous Lanificio E. Thomas in 1922. The wool mill specialised in high-quality fabrics that were exported worldwide.
Autolinee Varesine serves Brusimpiano. Line N06 runs between Varese, Bisuschio, Cuasso al Monte and Ponte Tresa approximately once an hour. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the service information before setting off. The range of highlights—from the lido and trails to churches and industrial history—helps you tailor your stay to your interests.
