Discover Brebbia
Accommodation in Brebbia
Brebbia brings together several distinct themes: the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, the early history of hydropower, the pipe museum and natural sites, each with its own character. The local tradition of Fagiolo dell’Occhio di Brebbia is another highlight. These features offer concrete ways to explore cultural history, landscape and seasonal traditions during your stay.
Church and the history of hydropower
The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo was declared a national monument in 1844. A Roman stone dedicated to Minerva is built into its north wall. The church therefore brings together two distinct historical points of reference: its 19th-century designation and an object from Roman times. The monument status applies to the church, while the dedication to Minerva applies to the stone. These two details point to different periods in Brebbia’s cultural heritage.
The history of hydropower can be traced through a specific project: in 1893, entrepreneur Achille Buzzi commissioned Lombardy’s first hydroelectric power station near Brebbia. It included a 700 m long canal between bends in the Bardello River. The power station supplied power to Buzzi’s textile mill in Gavirate and public lighting for the squares of Brebbia, Olginasio, Biandronno and Gavirate. This historical episode thus brings together industrial use and the lighting of public squares.
Wetland and lakeshore
Laghetasch is a peat wetland with fluctuating water levels on Motto Pivione hill near Brebbia. Sabbie d'Oro beach lies on Lake Maggiore at the mouth of the Bardello River. It is home to stands of common reed (Cannuccia di palude) and white willows (Salix Alba); 29 bird species also nest there. The natural sites have different features: Laghetasch is defined by its peat and fluctuating water levels, while Sabbie d'Oro stands out for its lakeside and riverside location, plants and nesting birds. This gives you a way to appreciate the wetland and lakeshore as two distinct aspects of local nature.
Pipe museum and technical heritage
The Brebbia Pipe Museum was founded in 1979 at the initiative of Enea Buzzi. It houses several thousand pipes, publications about pipes from around the world, and a study of pipe design divided into different periods. The collection therefore brings together objects, publications and a chronological exploration of design. There is more to exploring the subject than simply looking at the pipe as an object.
On the outside of Mulino Piona, one of the four wheels that once powered the machinery is visible. This single wheel offers a concrete reminder of the mill’s former technical function. Unlike the history of the hydroelectric power station, where the canal and use of the generated power are key, here the focus is on a visible component.
Local tradition in September
The tradition of Fagiolo dell’Occhio di Brebbia culminates in September with a festival featuring tastings, other activities and sales of the local bean. If you would like to take this tradition into account when planning your trip, September is the relevant time of year. The exact program may vary from one edition to the next.
Together, the church, hydropower history, museum, mill, landscape and bean festival offer a range of themes to explore during a stay in Brebbia. Depending on whether your interests lie more in cultural heritage, technical history, nature or local traditions, you can give these aspects different emphasis when planning your visit.
