On Lake Maggiore, Luino brings together lakeside areas, historic buildings, and trails through forests and valleys. If you’re looking for hotels in Luino, first consider whether you want to focus your stay on the lakeside promenade, historic landmarks, or hiking and cycling tours. The places and routes offer concrete points of reference and help you assess whether the destination suits your travel plans.

Waterfront and green spaces in Luino

Parco a Lago is a public green garden on the shore of Lake Maggiore. A continuous pedestrian promenade connects different parts of the waterfront. Luino’s lakeside promenade is also free to access and accessible to people with disabilities. Parco a Lago also has a children’s play area with shock-absorbing flooring. The waterfront therefore offers different options: a garden, paths by the water, and a designated play area.

Churches, art and history

The Chiesa e convento del Carmine were founded in 1477 on the lakeshore by the lay Carmelite Jacopo da Luino. A distinctive architectural detail is the carved red sandstone portal. The Madonna del Carmine is honored with an annual procession: her statue is carried through Luino each July. The exact dates may vary, so it’s worth checking them before your visit.

The Chiesa di San Pietro is considered Luino’s oldest church. Its Romanesque bell tower dates from between 1050 and 1075. The church also contains a 16th-century fresco cycle depicting the Adoration of the Magi and two saints speaking to each other. The two churches thus offer different historical points of reference: San Pietro is associated with its Romanesque tower and frescoes, while the Carmine stands out for its founding history and sandstone portal.

The Oratorio dei ss. Giuseppe e Dionigi also adds to the picture of the town’s architectural history: construction was completed in 1666. Its tall pronaos was a symbol of the town for a long time. Following its restoration in 2019, Palazzo Verbania serves as the repository for the archives of Vittorio Sereni and Piero Chiara, which belong to the Municipality of Luino.

Walking trails and routes in the surrounding area

The Sentiero Belvedere starts on Via Cavallotti, opposite Porto Vecchio, dominated by Luino’s landmark, the Madonnina, and leads into the old quarter. The trail passes through the forest to the village of Gaggio, then descends through the Colmegnino Valley to Colmegna. The route described thus connects parts of the town with a trail through forest and valley. No walking time or difficulty level is provided for this route, so you should not base your plans on an assumed duration.

Another option is the Luino section of the Sentiero Italia CAI. It leads from the ferry landing through the old town and the Carnella area to Colmegna, then continues through the lakeside forest to Maccagno. Compared with the Sentiero Belvedere, the sequence of places and sections mentioned here offers a different point of reference: the route starts at the ferry landing and continues past Colmegna to Maccagno. The two route descriptions can therefore be distinguished by their stated itineraries, without assuming a walking time or difficulty level.

Cycling and the market

For cycling, Luino’s forests and valleys offer mountain bike routes with varying levels of difficulty. The area is also suitable for road and off-road cycling. Because of the many changes in elevation, an e-bike is recommended for less-trained cyclists. This information can help you assess the type of ride you’re planning: the elevation profile matters as well as the choice between road and off-road cycling.

At Luino’s market, there is a dedicated area with stalls run by small local producers outside Palazzo Verbania. The individual vendors may vary. If you’d like to include the market in your stay, check the relevant date in advance; the market area described here does not indicate a specific day of the week.
