Accommodation in Ferrera Erbognone
Ferrera Erbognone brings together architectural and artistic history with the agricultural heritage and traditions of the Lomellina. The Erbognone stream crosses the municipal area from north to south. Late Bronze Age artefacts dating from 1300 to 1200 BC have been found along its course.
Church, art and local history
The parish church of San Giovanni Battista was built in the Romanesque style. It preserves frescoes by the painters Villa from Vigevano and Annibale Ticinese from Semiana. Another art-historical detail can be found at the right side altar, where the church preserves the painting Madonna of the Rosary by Guglielmo Caccia, known as il Moncalvo. The artist painted the work at the end of the 16th century. The church thus brings together Romanesque architecture and artworks from different contexts.
In the eastern part of Ferrera Erbognone, towards Sannazzaro, stands the surviving fortified house, or Casaforte. It is considered the only evidence that the town was probably fortified in the Middle Ages. Palazzo Strada preserves vaulted ceilings with frescoes; the building was known as Palazzo Spinelli in the late 19th century.
The historic icehouse of the Strada family also tells the story of the Lomellina’s farming culture. This spherical brick structure was once used to store food and bears witness to rural life in the area. Another aspect of local history is recorded in the folk song May 24 in Ferrera, also known as The Song of Maria Provera. It was inspired by the major strike by women rice weeders in Ferrera Erbognone in 1912. A Roman consular road also ran north of the town: it linked Ticinum (Pavia) with Augusta Taurinorum (Turin) and continued on to Gaul.
The Lomellina, its landscape and regional traditions
The municipal area belongs to landscape unit UdP2, the Lomellina rice-growing plain, shaped by the Sesia, Agogna and Terdoppio rivers. A closer look at the waterways reveals different geographical connections: the Erbognone crosses the municipal area from north to south, while the Agogna runs along the southwestern municipal boundary. There, landscape protection extends up to 150 metres from the banks of the Agogna. These landscape features help place Ferrera Erbognone within its regional setting.
The Ecomuseo del Paesaggio Lomellino is also relevant for understanding the region’s cultural heritage. It is an open-air museum dedicated to protecting, enhancing and promoting the Lomellina. The Sagra d’Ottobre is the municipality’s gastronomic festival and patronal feast. It brings together the Lomellina’s cultural traditions, social life and local cuisine. The Sagra di Ferrera Erbognone is held annually on the third Sunday in October; check the calendar for the relevant year before travelling.
The Cesta Lomellina’s range of regional products includes traditional cured meats, local cheeses, rice and rice products, De.Co. jams and sauces, pulses and traditional sweets. The Lomellina’s culinary heritage therefore extends beyond rice. Together with the patronal feast, it offers a way to experience the region through its food and community traditions.
