The landscape around Canneto Pavese is a mosaic of cultivated land, woods and natural paths. Canneto Pavese lies at one of the most panoramic points in the area and is spread across small villages on the crests of gently rounded hills. These lie between the left bank of the Versa stream and the ridge of the slopes above the right bank of the Scuropasso stream. The Parco locale di interesse sovracomunale (Plis) delle Valli di Recoaro extends across Broni and Canneto Pavese.

Hiking Trails Through the Hills

For trails with named starting points, you can choose between Parco Comunale, Fonti di Recoaro and the town center. VALLA’ e POZZI starts at Parco Comunale and ends at the square by Fonti di Recoaro. VALLE SCURA leads uphill from Fonti di Recoaro to the hamlet of Montuè in Canneto. Valli Fontana e Solinga starts in the town center, in an area with a centuries-old winemaking tradition. The Via di San Colombano is a panoramic trail through vineyards.

The routes described differ in their starting points, destinations and landscape settings: for VALLA’ e POZZI, the square by the Fonti is the destination, while VALLE SCURA leads uphill from there to Montuè. Valli Fontana e Solinga starts in the town center; the Via di San Colombano runs through vineyards. If you plan to take one of these trails, check the route conditions before setting out.

Historical Traces in Canneto

The medieval Pozzo di Sant'Antonio Abate served as a rest stop for pilgrims and travelers. It preserves original bas-reliefs bearing the coats of arms of the Arrigoni and Visconti families, as well as depictions of Saint Anthony the Abbot and Saint Roch. This site brings together its former function as a rest stop and the images that have been preserved.

The oldest manuscript found so far to mention Canneto is a deed of sale for a plot of land dated February 9, 1198. It refers to the place as “Caneto.” On January 1, 1886, Montù de Gabbi was officially renamed Canneto Pavese. The two dates mark different chapters in the area’s history: the early written record of the name and the later official renaming.

Local Specialties and Wine

I Bata Lavar is a traditional, oversized agnolotto from Canneto Pavese. Its name refers to its size: it is difficult to eat in one bite and hits the lip as you do so. Another local specialty is Spalla cotta di Canneto Pavese, prepared with a brine made from water, salt and spices. Both dishes offer a concrete impression of the local food culture, but should not be confused with each other.

The Casa del Buttafuoco stands on the site of the ancient Castle of Vigalone in Canneto Pavese. At the adjacent winery, you can taste Grande Rosso and Grappa del Buttafuoco. The Casa is also the tourist information point for the Unione Prima Collina.

Reservations are required from Tuesday to Saturday to taste Buttafuoco Storico. On Sunday, tastings are available by reservation only for groups of more than 20 people. During the “Alla scoperta del Buttafuoco Storico” tour, three wines from historic vineyards are tasted in the club’s cellar. Check the tour’s availability before your trip and book the tasting in accordance with the applicable conditions.
