Accommodation in Settala
Settala between springs and agricultural history
Settala can be explored through two clearly defined themes: spring and lowland landscapes, and the history of rural culture. If you are looking for a hotel in Settala, these themes can help you decide which aspects you would like to shape your stay. On the nature side, there are protected springs and characteristic lowland landscapes; the area’s cultural history leads to a historic Cascina and a centre devoted to rural life on the lower Lombardy plain. A route of historical and landscape significance also connects Conterico and Settala. Settala therefore offers a range of ways to explore the area, from nature and water to its agricultural past.
Sorgenti della Muzzetta and the lowlands
The Sorgenti della Muzzetta nature reserve lies within the municipalities of Rodano and Settala, in the eastern part of Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. The Lombardy Region established it in 1984. It protects the spring complex from which the Muzzetta rises and includes several characteristic lowland landscapes. The protected area is also included on the list of Sites of Community Importance. Springs and lowland landscapes are protected here together, so the reserve encompasses more than a single spring.
Fontanile Rile: springs and lowland woodland
Another natural feature of interest is Fontanile Rile in Settala. It consists of three active springheads surrounded by a well-preserved remnant of lowland woodland. The springheads and woodland remnant are two defining features of this natural area. Fontanile Rile was designated a “Zona a monumento naturale” (natural monument area) by Regional Government Resolution No. 8/10833 of 16 December 2009. At the same time, the area is currently not equipped for visitors; this is relevant when planning a visit.
Cascina Castello and rural culture
Cascina Castello shifts the focus from nature to agricultural history. The complex probably originated in the 14th century as a fortified agricultural estate. Since 2007, it has housed the Centro Etnografico e Storico-Agricolo delle Arti e Tradizioni contadine. The centre explores rural culture on the lower Lombardy plain up to the mid-20th century. Two periods are therefore brought together: the complex’s probable origins in the 14th century and the centre’s use of it since 2007. In terms of subject matter, the focus moves from a single historic building complex to the broader world of rural society. If you are interested in regional history, this combination of architectural history and rural culture offers a distinct way to explore the area.
The route between Conterico and Settala
Another point of historical and landscape interest is the route between Conterico and Settala. It is considered significant for its historical and landscape value and passes near the Marcita and the rural building complex of Cascina Cassinetta. Unlike a single spring area or building complex, this route brings two endpoints and nearby landmarks along the way into focus. It thus complements the individual natural and architectural sites with a connection between two places, offering a different perspective on Settala than a visit to a spring or the history of a Cascina.
