Magenta brings together important sites from the city’s history with natural areas and trails in Parco della Valle del Ticino. Its attractions range from the Battle of Magenta and the history of the Risorgimento to woodland habitats, botanical trails and a route through the agricultural area. Magenta can therefore be explored as a destination for both culture and nature.

Getting to Magenta

Two rail services run to Magenta: Trenitalia’s Torino–Milano Centrale Regional Veloce service runs hourly. The S6 suburban line from Novara via Milano to Pioltello/Treviglio is operated by Trenord and runs every 30 minutes. Check the timetable before travelling. By car, you can reach Magenta via the A4 Torino–Milano motorway: take the Marcallo/Mesero exit, then follow the SS336 expressway towards Magenta.

Natural Areas and Trails

Parco della Valle del Ticino is a regional park that covers the entire Magenta area. Oak and hornbeam trees grow in Riserva Fagiana; in wetter areas, poplars, willows and alders also grow along Ramo Delizia. The reserve has 30 kilometres of trails for walking or cycling. This makes it a more extensive option than the shorter themed trails around Centro Parco “La Fagiana”.

Centro Parco is located within Zona Naturalistica Orientata “La Fagiana” and is the park’s best-equipped area for welcoming visitors. A museum trail there explores the habitats and land-dwelling wildlife of Parco del Ticino; touchscreens complement the exhibition. Centro Parco also has a nature trail about 1,500 metres long for visitors who are blind, which runs through the protected area’s woodlands.

The Percorso Botanico Inclusivo is about one kilometre long and leads to Ramo Delizia, an old channel of the Ticino River. Along the way, it passes through a mesophilic lowland forest, as well as riverside vegetation and the vegetation of smaller waterways. A combined pedestrian and cycle bridge crosses Ramo Delizia. The trail is equipped with a tactile map, eight tactile botanical panels, and signposts and information in Braille. The named trails differ in both length and focus, ranging from longer routes for walking or cycling to botanical and nature-focused experiences.

Cascina Paradiso offers another way to discover the natural environment. Visitors can learn about the work of LIPU and see injured birds that are about to be released back into the wild. For cyclists, the “L’uomo e la biosfera nel Parco del Ticino” route follows its own course: ideally, it starts in the town centre at the railway station and follows the cycle path to Pontevecchio. From there, the route continues through the agricultural area to Parco del Ticino.

History and Culture in Magenta

Casa Giacobbe is a 17th-century villa. During the Battle of Magenta in 1859, it served as the Austrian headquarters. Bullet marks on its façade still bear witness to the battle of 4 June 1859. The Museo della Battaglia is housed in Casa Giacobbe and offers a comprehensive educational trail about the Battle of Magenta and the city’s Risorgimento history. The villa, its historic traces and the museum offer different perspectives on the subject: the building itself, the history of the battle and its connection to Magenta’s history.

The Teatro Lirico is another of the city’s cultural venues. Founded in 1904, it was a venue dedicated exclusively to opera. Following restoration work that began in 2004, it returned to its original purpose and is once again a focal point of the city’s cultural life. Its cultural programme includes theatre and music seasons, the Magenta Jazz Festival, Teatrando and other major events. If you would like to plan around an event, check the relevant dates.
