San Vittore Olona brings together several themes that can help you plan your trip: a wetland on the Olona, historic mills and the Cinque Mulini cross-country race. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider which aspect of the town matters most for your stay. The town’s history stretches from settlement in Roman times to a race held annually. Nature, local heritage and sporting history thus offer different starting points for choosing where to stay.

Foppa and the Olona: Wetland and River Landscape

Foppa is a body of still water near the Olona River. Its bed consists of the remains of an old riverbed. The La Foppa wetland has been undergoing restoration since 2009. Here, a body of water with a geological history meets a restoration project that has continued over many years. The Tarabusino project covers areas along the banks of the Olona in Canegrate, San Vittore Olona and Legnano. These areas have been enhanced to improve their ecological function and make them more suitable for animals such as the little bittern. The two nature-related themes have different focuses: Foppa is defined by still water and an old riverbed, while the Tarabusino project focuses on the ecological function of the riverbanks and the conditions for animal species.

On a walk on April 22, 2026, an Olona route passed through San Vittore Olona and followed a cycle path along the river. This brings the river itself into focus alongside the wetland.

Mills, Local History and Cinque Mulini

The area of San Vittore Olona had been settled since Roman times, from the 1st century AD. The mills offer another way to explore its history. Mulino Montoli operated continuously as a mill for more than five centuries. At Mulino Meraviglia, the mechanical equipment is still intact; only some wooden parts have been replaced. The contrast highlights two different aspects: Montoli’s exceptionally long use as a mill, and the preservation of Meraviglia’s mechanical equipment.

The church of Santo Stefano al Lazzaretto, dedicated to Saint Stephen, was also used as a lazaretto. Its dedication and this historic function give the church a distinctive place in the town’s history.

Sport offers another point of interest: the Cinque Mulini cross-country race, held annually in San Vittore Olona, was first run in 1933. The race is named after the five watermills it passes. Its name thus links the event to the local history of milling, while its annual staging offers a recurring reason to visit.

Choose a Hotel Based on Your Reason for Traveling

For Cinque Mulini, the date of that year’s edition is part of the planning; if you are interested in local history or the river landscape, those themes can shape your stay. This makes it easy to tailor your hotel search to your personal travel plans.
