San Colombano al Lambro combines architectural and church history with nature watching and a museum. When choosing a hotel, consider whether architecture, religious art, collections or observing the landscape will shape your stay. These highlights range from the octagonal layout of Parco Lazzaretto to the birds at Sentiero Natura.

Park, Architecture and Nature Watching

Parco Lazzaretto is a city park with 7,950 square metres of landscaped and equipped green space. Its precise octagonal shape dates back to the original boundary from the 17th century. The park’s monumental complex includes a main octagonal chapel from the 17th century and two smaller hexagonal side chapels from the 19th century. The Lazzaretto was historically used as a lazaretto. Its layout, chapel designs and different construction periods make the complex interesting from several perspectives.

In the hilly landscape of San Colombano al Lambro, there is an equipped rest area at Moretto, next to the experimental vineyard. Along Sentiero Natura, the Laghetti di Val Panate are a popular spot for observing resident and migratory birds. At the bird of prey observation station on the same trail, you can watch birds of prey migrating south from Central Europe in autumn. The focus differs: at the Laghetti, it is on resident and migratory birds, while the station is particularly suited to watching the autumn migration of birds of prey.

Museum, Churches and Local History

The Museo Paleontologico e Archeologico “Virginio Caccia” preserves fossil and archaeological collections. They help visitors understand the origins and history of Colle di San Colombano as a unique natural feature of the Po Valley. The museum thus complements architectural history and sacred art with a distinct perspective on the past of the Colle.

The Chiesa parrocchiale di San Colombano Abate has a 19th-century neoclassical façade and three naves. The church houses paintings by Bernardino Campi and Gian Giacomo Barbelli. On the feast of San Colombano, celebrated each year on 21 November, a solemn procession passes through the streets of the historic centre.

Other historic buildings mark different periods: the Valbissera Dominican complex dates from the 16th century, and the church of San Francesco from 1580. The Portone was built in 1691 by Charles II, King of Spain, as the royal entrance to Oppidum Insigne. The birthplace of Don Carlo Gnocchi has been preserved in a typical 19th-century courtyard in the historic centre. Together, these buildings offer a glimpse into different periods of local history.

Guided Tours and Pilgrimage Route

Guided tours of the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista are available by prior reservation. Tours of the Oratorio di San Rocco also require advance booking and are intended for groups. Guided winery tours are also available for groups and school classes. If you plan to include one of these tours in your trip, take its booking requirements and target audience into account.

Stage 13 of the Cammino di San Colombano runs from Sant’Angelo Lodigiano to San Colombano al Lambro and is 13.1 kilometres long. It adds a specific stage of the pilgrimage route to the themes of architectural and church history.
