Vaprio dʼAdda combines Romanesque sculpture and connections to Leonardo with industrial history and nature by the water. Its attractions range from a medieval architectural landmark and a historic paper mill to an interactive gallery and a woodland area. These varied themes offer several perspectives on the town: cultural history, architectural heritage and the landscape along the Adda and Naviglio.

Culture, Leonardo and Historic Buildings

The Chiesa di San Colombano is a medieval architectural landmark with significant Romanesque sculpture. Its medieval character and sculpture give the visit an art-historical focus. However, the church is not always open. For appointments and enquiries about opening hours, you can contact the Parrocchia San Nicolò di Vaprio d’Adda: Piazza Chiesa 8, by telephone on 0290988328.

Villa Melzi d’Eril is associated with the history of the Melzi family. Leonardo da Vinci stayed with Gerolamo Melzi in Vaprio dʼAdda in 1493 and from December 1506 to May 1507. As of 18 November 2024, the villa was privately owned and not open to visitors; check current access arrangements before planning a visit. The interactive gallery “Leonardo in Adda” is a separate attraction: it is currently accessible by prior reservation, and opening calendars may vary. Take reservations and the calendar into account when planning your visit.

The Cartiera Sottrici Binda is a historic paper mill whose first section dates back to 1774. The Casa del Custode delle Acque is documented from 1542. It stands on the embankment of the Adda River, where the Naviglio della Martesana makes a sharp turn. The dates refer to different aspects: 1774 marks the first section of the paper mill, while 1542 is the earliest documented date for the Casa.

Another historic villa is Villa Castelbarco in Vaprio d’Adda, by the Naviglio della Martesana and the Adda River. It is a private venue for wedding receptions, exhibitions and events. The spiral staircase “Vortice” connects Piazza Cavour with the Alzaia and is inspired by Leonardo’s genius. If you plan to include the staircase in your visit, check access in advance.

Nature along the Adda and the Naviglio

Bosco del Salecc lies between the Naviglio della Martesana and the Adda River. Visitors can go for walks and picnics there. You can also observe various bird species and the native, specially protected squirrel. Its location between the river and the canal shapes the landscape, while wildlife watching offers another focus.

The “Adda di Leonardo” Ecomuseum follows the Adda River along a 21-kilometre route in Parco Adda Nord. The entire route is suitable for cyclists and pedestrians. Unlike the walks and picnics at Bosco del Salecc, the ecomuseum route has a defined length and is designed for two modes of travel.
