Lissone offers several different points of interest for a stay: the MAC, with its collection on the development of European art; Piazza Libertà, with its history; and a signposted running route in the part of Parco GruBrìa that lies within Lissone. Historic villas and the municipal theatre add to the cultural offerings. When choosing how to spend your stay, you can focus on art, architectural history or a sporting activity.

Art in a European Context

The MAC – Museo d'Arte Contemporanea in Lissone houses a significant collection documenting the development of Informal Art and Pop Art in Europe. Its European context distinguishes this artistic focus from the more locally historical perspective of Piazza Libertà: here, the development of two art movements is central; there, the origins of the square and its historic design features take centre stage.

The History of Piazza LibertĂ

The history of Piazza Libertà can be understood through a clear sequence of events: the old parish church was demolished in 1933; in 1934, following its demolition and the removal of several traditional courtyards, including Curt di Pagan, the square was created. The dates therefore refer to two successive steps, not the same event. The piazza also features a rizzada, a cobbled surface made of pebbles that recalls traditional paving of the period. The square’s history thus links a structural change with a specific material detail.

Historic Villas and Theatre

On the western side of Piazza Libertà stands the 18th-century Villa Mussi, set apart by a double row of trees. Villa Reati – Baldironi is a significant historic building dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Compared by date, it belongs to an earlier period than Villa Mussi; the two buildings offer different points of reference for Lissone’s architectural history. Palazzo Terragni is Lissone’s municipal theatre. Its stated function sets it apart from the MAC and its art collection, and from the villas and their historic periods.

Furniture Tradition and Running Route

Lissone is known as the “capital of furniture” for its production and trade in furnishings. The term refers to both sectors: manufacturing and trade. Alongside art, theatre and architectural history, furniture production and trade are also distinctive parts of the town’s profile.

There is a signposted 2.5 km running route in the part of Parco GruBrìa that lies within Lissone. A GPX file is available to download for the route. The running route offers a different focus from the MAC and Piazza Libertà: it is a designated sporting activity, while the art collection and local history take centre stage at those other sites. The route length provides a practical point of reference, and the GPX file is a digital aid for planning your route.
