History and Architecture

Il Nuovo Campanile was inaugurated on March 26, 1911, stands about 60 meters tall and has nine bells. The inauguration date places the building in its historical context; its height and number of bells provide specific architectural and cultural details.

Castel Merlino dates from the late 12th century. At the beginning of the feudal rule of the Counts of Gambara, it was their first residence. Its architectural features include a deep moat, sloping masonry and a projecting brick string course. The castle’s historical role and architectural features offer two distinct ways to learn about the site.

The Chiesa di San Rocco also reveals a sequence of historical periods: it was built in the 15th century and remodeled in the Baroque style at the beginning of the 18th century. Its construction and later alterations mark two phases in its history. The Chiesa di Sant'Anna offers another perspective on religious art, with an altar dedicated to Blessed Paola Gambara Costa and a painting by Santo Cattaneo kept there. The dedication and the painting are two distinct points of interest within the church.

The Chiesa di San Donnino is part of the area’s earlier church history. According to some documents, it may already have stood beside the Benedictine convent of S. Donnino in 1194, when the convent was under the authority of Badia di Leno. This possible early mention dates considerably further back than the construction and remodeling phases of the Chiesa di San Rocco.

Palazzo Maggi and the Townscape

In Cadignano, Palazzo Maggi is an important architectural complex. It houses frescoes by Lattanzio Gambara, created around 1560. One tower has an arcaded loggia overlooking the countryside and the wooded area by the Strone. Art, architecture and views come together here: the frescoes provide an art-historical point of interest, while the loggia opens onto the surrounding landscape.

The historic center can also be explored from different perspectives. The trees and flower beds of Parco Comunale «Angelo e Lina Nocivelli», including rose plantings, frame it. A footbridge over the Strone connects Via San Rocco to the park. The central squares form a pleasant walking route around the historic core. The direct connection to the park and the route through the squares thus offer distinct ways to experience the area.
