Dello: Church Art and Autumn Traditions
Accommodation in Dello
Dello combines sacred architecture with recurring cultural events. The churches in Dello, Corticelle Pieve, Quinzanello, and Boldeniga differ in their architectural styles, frescoes, and historical details. There is also an autumn festival and the historic Centro Culturale “San Giorgio” theater. This allows you to plan a stay around a range of cultural interests.
Churches and their distinctive features
The Chiesa - Pieve “Madonna della Formigola” di Corticelle Pieve stands in open countryside, surrounded by a few rustic buildings. The present building dates from the 14th to 15th centuries and is in Lombard-Romanesque style. It has three naves: the layout of the interior and the Romanesque architectural forms give the Pieve a different character from the other churches in the area.
The decorated, semicircular brick choir of the Santuario “Madonna della Spiga” di Quinzanello preserves original Romanesque structures from the 13th century. A canvas depicts the legendary apparition of the Virgin Mary with ears of wheat in her hands. Here, architecture and subject matter go hand in hand: the choir preserves older structural features, while the painting depicts a religious motif echoed in the sanctuary’s name. The name “Madonna della Spiga” may be connected to the tradition of gathering at the sanctuary in May and on the second Sunday of Pentecost to pray for the protection of the harvest.
The Chiesa di S.Pietro (S.Rocco) di Dello also combines a long history with works of art. It is dated to the 11th to 12th centuries and richly adorned with 15th-century frescoes. Initial consolidation and repair work was followed by an extensive restoration of the frescoes. Both the building’s early date and its decoration from a later century are therefore central to its story.
Altars, frescoes, and traces of history
In the Chiesa Parrocchiale “S. Lorenzo” di Quinzanello, the main altar dates from the 18th century and is dated 1777. The two side altars are dedicated to the Last Supper and the Rosary. They came from the deconsecrated church of S. Clemente in Brescia and were acquired in 1839. Their origin links the parish church to another sacred building in Brescia; the date of the main altar and the acquisition of the side altars tell of different stages in its furnishings.
The Chiesa Parrocchiale “S. Giacomo” di Corticelle Pieve has the appearance of a 17th-century Baroque parish church. Remains of 15th-century frescoes were found in a chapel beside its bell tower. The building’s appearance and the discovery date from different centuries. In Boldeniga, the existence of a church dedicated to Saint Zeno has been documented since at least 1410. The presbytery of the Chiesa Parrocchiale “S. Zenone” may contain a small painting attributed to the school of Moretto. This tentative attribution is part of the recorded description of the work.
Autumn festival and cultural program
The Sagra del Fungo Chiodino is a recurring autumn festival in Dello. Dates and the program vary from one edition to the next. If you would like to combine your stay with the festival, check the dates and program for the relevant edition before planning around it.
The Centro Culturale “San Giorgio” is Dello’s historic theater. Theater performances, shows, and concerts take place there. For specific planning, it is worth checking the announced event dates: this will help you determine whether the current program matches your interests and the dates of your stay, without reducing the different types of events to a single cultural offering.
The Biblioteca Comunale di Dello has an internet workstation and an area for children and young people. As service details may change, it is best to check them before your visit. Alongside the churches, theater, and autumn festival, the library adds a municipal offering for different age groups to Dello’s cultural scene.
