Discover Solto Collina through its glacial erratic boulders, nature trails, churches and festivals. Each destination offers a different focus for planning your trip: geological origins, plant life, trails or history.

Landscape and Nature

The Sentiero dei massi erratici G.Nangeroni leads to erratic boulders on the Esmate plateau. They were deposited there by Quaternary glaciers around twelve thousand years ago and originate from the upper Valcamonia. More than 650 erratic boulders have been recorded in the Solto Collina area. The trail therefore leads to a landscape feature whose origins can be traced back to the Ice Age.

Another nature highlight is the Valle del Freddo Nature Reserve. Edelweiss, gentians and rhododendrons grow there at elevations of 350 to 700 metres—plants normally found only above 1,000 metres and not uncommonly above 1,500 metres. The cause is a pronounced microthermal phenomenon: cold air emerges from so-called “cold caves” in the ground. The difference between their elevation and the altitudes where these plants are usually found makes this unusual feature easy to appreciate.

San Defendente, in the Esmate area, is located at an elevation of 674 metres. From there, views extend from the lake at Lovere to Monte Isola and Corna Trentapassi. These named viewpoints offer a different focus from the geology of the erratic boulders or the plant life in Valle del Freddo.

Hiking Trails and Cycling

The Sentiero dei naturalisti in the Esmate area uses information panels to introduce geology, geomorphology, botany and the landscape’s vegetation. The CAI 565 C nature trail follows old mountain paths. Be sure to distinguish this number from CAI trail 565, which is used by the Sentiero La Panoramica.

The Sentiero La Panoramica starts at Via Apostoli 31 in the municipality of Solto Collina; the return route follows the path to S. Defendente. Free parking for the trail is available on Via Apostoli. Check before you travel whether it is available for your visit.

Hiking trails connect Solto with Fonteno and Riva. These connections between villages complement the more specifically named trails in the Esmate area; the information therefore differs in whether it focuses on connected places or the route of a particular trail.

Cycling enthusiasts have two geographical options, too: the Solto Collina MTB network connects Lake Iseo with Val Cavallina. The Ciclabile Monaco-Milano crosses the municipal area. For the MTB network, the connection between the two named areas is key; for the Ciclabile, it is the route through the municipality.

Churches and Festivals Throughout the Year

The Chiesa del Crocefisso houses a wooden group by Andrea Fantoni. The parish church of San Gaudenzio in Esmate was already part of the Pieve di Solto in 1360; the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta was consecrated in 1471. These historical references are distinct: they range from a work of art to affiliation with the Pieve and a precisely dated year of consecration.

The Festa di Sant'Antonio takes place every year on January 17 around a traditional bonfire. A well-attended festival is held at San Defendente on the first Sunday in July. Check both dates locally for the year of your trip.
