Mapello: Sentiero 891, Churches and Villa Gromo
Accommodation in Mapello
Mapello offers several specific points of interest for planning a trip: the Sentiero 891, religious buildings and Villa Gromo di Mapello. The route begins at the Santuario della Madonna di Prada. The churches and villa add architecture and historical context to the hiking theme.
Trails and Landscape
The Sentiero 891 is a 14-kilometre trail that is recommended for walking in two stages, which can be chosen freely. It begins at the Santuario della Madonna di Prada in the municipality of Mapello, at an altitude of 250 metres; there is a car park there. Trail conditions may vary seasonally; check them before your hike.
Parts of Mapello’s municipal area lie within the local P.L.I.S. del Monte Canto e del Bedesco park. The Santuario della Madonna di Prada is situated on the broad plain at the eastern foot of Monte Canto and is surrounded by a natural landscape of particular scenic value. The trail and the sanctuary’s natural surroundings therefore cater to different interests when planning a trip: the route on the one hand, and the landscape at the foot of Monte Canto on the other.
Churches and Architectural History
A 500-metre avenue lined with lime trees leads to the Santuario. The church of San Girolamo stands at the beginning of the avenue. It has a flat wooden ceiling with densely decorated and gilded coffered panels. The individual coffers divide up the wooden surface; their elaborate decoration and gilding make the ceiling a distinctive feature of the church.
An initial oratory at the Santuario della Madonna di Prada was probably built as early as the 14th century and rebuilt at the end of the 15th century. The sanctuary’s history therefore probably dates back to this early oratory and also includes the later reconstruction.
The Baroque parish church of San Michele Arcangelo, built in isolation on a hill, dominates Mapello. Its location differs markedly from that of the Santuario, which lies on the broad plain at the eastern foot of Monte Canto. Visitors comparing the two churches will see their different settings: the hill with San Michele and the plain by the Santuario. San Girolamo, in turn, is distinguished by its position at the beginning of the avenue and its decorated wooden ceiling.
Villa Gromo and Historical Context
Villa Gromo di Mapello was built in the first half of the 18th century on commission from the Counts Zanchi. It is set within an amphitheatre formed by centuries-old trees. The surrounding trees give the villa its own connection to the landscape, while its construction date and patrons provide historical context.
In terms of chronology, the villa is considerably more recent than the Santuario: the first oratory was probably built as early as the 14th century and rebuilt at the end of the 15th century, while the villa was built in the first half of the 18th century. If cultural history is your focus, this allows you to compare Mapello’s different building periods and locations.
This gives you a clear question to consider when planning your trip: Is the Sentiero 891, with its division into stages, the deciding factor, or are you more interested in the architectural history and the churches’ different locations? This distinction can also help you choose a hotel in Mapello that suits your interests.
