Nembro: Whetstone Tradition, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Nembro
Nembro offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: the history of whetstone production and mining, church art, nature observation, and routes and places connected with movement and the river.
Whetstone and Mining History
The MUPIC – Museo delle Pietre Coti della Valle Seriana is dedicated to the local tradition of extracting and working whetstones. They were used to sharpen agricultural tools such as hay mowers. The museum presents the stages of extraction, processing, and marketing. This makes it possible to view the whetstone tradition as a process: from extracting the material to processing and distributing it.
The Museo della Miniera focuses on a different subject. Recreated to resemble the entrance to a mine, it displays historical evidence such as tools, materials, documents, and photographs. Comparing the two museums, the MUPIC focuses on the history of whetstones from extraction to marketing, while the Museo della Miniera presents evidence from the history of mining.
Art and Historical Layers
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta in Borgo features remains dating from the 5th or 6th century AD, as well as a later medieval structure. After years of deterioration, it was restored in 2000. Its architectural elements therefore provide two distinct points of reference in time: early remains and a later medieval structure.
A fresco in the Santuario della Madonna dello Zuccarello depicts the Madonna with the dead Christ; it was solemnly crowned in 1920. While the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta can be dated through its architectural elements, the subject depicted in the fresco and its dated coronation offer a different way to engage with Nembro’s sacred art.
Al Tuo Passo offers another way to engage with art: this permanent artwork extends along the Nembro–Lonno section of the Via delle Sorelle. Here, the point of interest is not a single work in one place, but an artwork along a stretch of route.
Nature Observation at the Oasi Saletti
The Oasi Saletti draws attention to nature and ecological processes. It contains a phytoremediation lake of about 6,000 m²; the wetland covers about 12,500 m² in total. The lake is therefore about half the size of the entire wetland. The Oasi is considered a wetland of considerable naturalistic importance and has great plant and animal biodiversity.
The Oasi gives school pupils, students, and other interested visitors the opportunity to observe ecological balances that emerge spontaneously and new biocoenoses. A biocoenosis is a community of organisms. Nature observation here focuses both on the size of the wetland and on the ecological developments taking place within it.
Routes and the River
The cycle and pedestrian path between Gavarno and Nembro connects the hamlet of Gavarno with the larger center of Nembro. The route highlights the connection between these two parts of the town and is open to both cyclists and pedestrians.
Lungoserio is an equipped recreational area and also an open-air museum offering an opportunity to connect with the river. It brings together recreation and a connection with the river. This focus differs from the historical and artistic themes of the museums, churches, and the Al Tuo Passo artwork.
