Carro lies in the Alta Val di Vara in the Ligurian Apennines and is part of the Montemarcello–Magra Regional Natural Park. Its highlights range from a woodland landscape and historic trails to archaeological sites, sacred art and music. This means you can take both nature and culture into account when choosing your destination.

Woods, trails and nature

More than 90 percent of Carro’s municipal area is covered by continuous woodland. Historic trails and winding mule tracks also shape the landscape: they are suitable for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. At Rio di Agnola, the watercourse is part of the Natura 2000 network; the presence of the yellow-bellied toad has also been documented there. Rio di Colla is an aquatic and riparian habitat.

Routes and historic sites

One route leads from Carro via Pavareto, Mola and Pietra Spaccata to Monte San Nicolao, where it connects with the Alta Via delle Cinque Terre. The remains of the 12th-century Hospitale di San Nicolao lie near Monte San Nicolao. Along these trails, you can take in historic sites as well as scenery and enjoy physical activity.

For routes starting in Carro, the stated distances offer a useful comparison: Route 625 passes through Trambacco, Cerreta, Stanga, Craviola and Monte Rocche to Vagie and is 12.6 kilometres long. Route 627 passes through Castello and continues towards Craviola, covering 8.2 kilometres. Route 627c connects Agnola and Castello over 0.9 kilometres. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

The prehistoric past is also linked to specific places. The Monte Castelfermo–Cota area contains two Iron Age settlements of the prehistoric Ligurians. One is on the summit of Monte Castelfermo at an elevation of 791 metres, while the other is in the valley below at Cota. The two sites therefore differ not only in location but also in elevation.

Cultural sites and art

The Chiesa parrocchiale di San Lorenzo Martire was built in the 15th century. The church houses a painting of the Madonna del Carmine attributed to Domenico Piola and a painting of Saint Lawrence by Giuseppe Dorffmeister. In Cerreta, the Santuario di Sant'Antonio Maria Gianelli is dedicated to the saint. Another testimony to local history is the Essiccatoio di castagne dei Sepponi, also known as Casone Secchereccio: the building was erected in 1821. Agnola is also home to an unusual apotropaic head.

The Museo Mineralogico Permanente features minerals found in the municipality of Carro, as well as collections of precious and semi-precious stones and fluorescent minerals. A municipal notice dated December 19, 2025, reports that the Museo Mineralogico is closed to visitors for renovation work. Check the latest status before your trip.

Paganini and getting your bearings

The Paganini Festival of Carro was established in 2001 to celebrate the work of Niccolò Paganini. It begins and ends in Carro, at a house associated with the Paganini family. The connection to Paganini is therefore part of the festival’s history and is also linked to a specific place in Carro. For help finding your way around, the municipality also offers a free audio guide through izi.TRAVEL.
