Luni Mare Between Roman History and Activities
Accommodation in Luni Mare
There are two distinct ways to experience Luni Mare: exploring Luni’s Roman history and the sports facilities at the Luni Mare Sporting Club. The surrounding area also offers routes for walking and cycling. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you want your stay to focus more on culture, sports or activities in the region.
Roman History in Luni
The museum and archaeological site of Luni tell the 1,400-year history of the Roman colony of Luna. The Museo di Luni brings together an exhibition space and the excavations of the ancient Roman colony, which was dedicated to the goddess Luna. The visit therefore focuses on both the exhibition and the archaeological remains.
The archaeological site has interpretive information panels and a free audio guide that you can listen to on your own mobile phone. Step-free paths are marked on the visitor map and provide access through the site. The map can therefore help visitors who specifically want to use step-free paths find their way around.
Getting to and Finding Your Way Around the Archaeological Site
The museum and archaeological site of Luni can be reached directly from the A12 motorway via two designated rest areas marked “Antica Luni.” From the designated rest area, a 1.2-kilometre walk leads to the archaeological site after you park. The Museo di Luni car park is on Via Falaschi. This information can help you factor the drive and the walk from the car park into your visit plans.
Sports Facilities in Luni Mare
The Luni Mare Sporting Club has a swimming pool, tennis courts, beach tennis and beach volleyball courts, a five-a-side football pitch and a multipurpose hall. Activities there include roller skating and hockey, among others. The club’s facilities are for all age groups and range from beginner to competitive level. The Sporting Club is also accessible to visitors with disabilities.
The Play-District programme in Luni Mare is separate from the Sporting Club’s facilities. It includes basketball, an artistic roller-skating class, beach tennis, a swimming class and boxing, among other activities. The programme also includes workshops, street art and music activities, as well as educational activities about sustainable eating. These different areas give an idea of the range of sports and extracurricular activities, without implying a particular event date.
Activities on Regional Routes
The region offers further options for cycling and walking routes. The 12-kilometre Ciclopedonale sul Canale Lunense runs through the Magra Valley and alongside the Canale Lunense. Its route passes through Santo Stefano Magra, Sarzana, Castelnuovo Magra and Luni. The Via Francigena can also be explored on foot or by bicycle in the area around Luni.
The Tenuta di Marinella also shapes the surroundings of Luni Mare: it stretches from Marinella to the built-up area of Luni Mare and a few fields beyond. The estate is used for walking, running and cycling in the surrounding area. Alongside the regional routes, this offers opportunities for activities around the estate; it does not refer to a formal, marked route.
For planning purposes, there is a clear distinction: the Sporting Club brings several sports together at one facility, while the Ciclopedonale is a 12-kilometre regional route through four municipalities.
