Monterosso al Mare offers several reasons to choose it as a destination: historic buildings, paths through the landscape, and local specialties. If you are looking for a hotel, you can decide based on whether culture, hiking, or the coast is especially important to you during your stay.

Culture between Fegina and the historic center

At the end of Spiaggia di Fegina stands the Statua del Gigante. It depicts Neptune, the god of the sea, and is about 14 meters tall. The statue was created in 1910 by sculptor Arrigo Minerbi and engineer Levacher. Its subject, location, and date of creation clearly connect the monument to the coast and the history of the town.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, a Genoese Gothic church, is located in the historic center. Its interior is divided into three aisles; the artworks inside depict scenes from the life of San Giovanni Battista. The square bell tower was originally built as a defensive tower. The church thus combines a distinctive architectural feature with depictions from the life of its patron saint.

On the promontory separating Fegina from the old village, the walls of the citadel and the remains of an old castle with two towers survive as parts of the defensive system. Torre Aurora stands on the cliff below the rocky rise that separates the two districts. The Convento dei Frati minori cappuccini is also one of Monterosso’s religious sites: it was founded by Capuchin friars and serves prayer, reflection, and spirituality.

Views, trails, and landscape

From Punta Corone, you can enjoy a view of Monterosso’s old village and San Cristoforo hill. Another viewpoint is the Santuario di Soviore: it lies at an elevation of about 400 meters and offers panoramic views of the sea and the Ligurian coast. The sanctuary’s history dates back to the 11th century.

Several route descriptions focus on different aspects. One version of the hike to Monte Vè o Focone leads to its 488-meter summit. This hike includes an approximately 20-minute detour to the historic ruins of the Eremo di Sant'Antonio del Mesco. The ruin dates from the 11th century and lies in a dense holm oak forest. Trail 571 follows the northwestern ridge of Monte Focone to its 488-meter summit.

Before Monterosso, trail 592-4 passes through old lemon groves and the terraced vineyards of the Vetua farm. Punta Mesco has a different landscape: the promontory consists mainly of sandstone, and the vegetation differs markedly between its southern and northern slopes. There is also a sea cave on the coast there. The landscapes described thus range from agriculturally cultivated slopes to a promontory with its own geology and vegetation.

Local specialties and festive traditions

Salted anchovies from Monterosso are a traditional dish of the Cinque Terre and are prepared according to the old recipe of Monterosso al Mare. They are processed by hand over two or three days. This specialty is therefore defined not only by its ingredients, but also by a specifically described artisanal preparation method.

A traditional part of the festivities in honor of S. Giovanni, the patron saint of Monterosso al Mare, is releasing lanterns onto the sea. If you would like to plan your trip around a celebration, check the exact dates in advance.

Getting there and finding your way

Numerous Intercity trains stop at Monterosso station; regional trains from La Spezia connect all five villages of the Cinque Terre. Train services depend on the season and timetable. Therefore, check the current timetable before your trip, especially if you are planning your arrival or onward journey around it.

Monterosso therefore offers several specific points of interest to help you decide: historic architecture and defensive remains, viewpoints and described hiking trails, or local cuisine and festive traditions. These highlights can help you choose the destination based on what you would like to explore during your stay.
