For a trip to Moconesi, cultural history, routes and landscape can be considered as distinct areas of interest. The Polimuseo del giocattolo e naturalistico di Gattorna recalls the local tradition of toy merchants. The Itinerario Storico Colombiano, several churches and a protected mountain area offer different points of interest. When deciding what you want to focus on, you can distinguish between cultural heritage, human-shaped landscapes and nature.

Route and human-shaped landscape

The Itinerario Storico Colombiano begins in Terrarossa in Moconesi and runs for 19 kilometres to Nervi and Quinto. The route is also known as the “sentiero del pane.” It passes through a landscape shaped by people, with old houses, paths, terraces and dry-stone walls. Both the route itself and these landscape features are important to understanding the trail: it has named starting and ending points, while the houses, terraces and walls bring the area’s human-shaped character to life. The Itinerario thus offers a tangible way to explore cultural history and landscape, distinct from Moconesi’s art and nature themes.

Churches and their artworks

The Santuario di Nostra Signora della Guardia is located in Gattorna, within Moconesi. The present building dates back to 1721, when the original structure was extensively enlarged. Inside is a 16th-century triptych attributed to Vespasiano. A triptych is a three-panel artwork; in this case, both its date and its attribution are notable points of reference.

The Chiesa Parrocchiale del Sacro Cuore di Gesù was officially opened for worship on 12 September 1909. On 28 February 1916, Bishop Giovanni Gamberoni of the Diocese of Chiavari consecrated the church. These dates mark different events in its history: first its opening for worship, and later its consecration.

The church history of the Chiesa Parrocchiale di S. Margherita Moconesi Alto dates back to the 13th century: by then, it had already been elevated to the status of a rectory. Its 16th-century triptych depicts Saint Margaret of Antioch among saints. The two triptychs mentioned therefore offer different points of reference for viewing sacred art: the work in the Santuario is attributed to Vespasiano, while S. Margherita’s features a specific image of a saint.

Natural area and festive tradition

Another point of interest is the ZSC site “Monte Caucaso” (code IT1331811). This mountain area, little affected by human activity, includes beech forest, springs, streams and well-preserved rocky habitats. In contrast to the human-shaped landscape of the Itinerario Colombiano, the focus here is on natural habitats. This brings two distinct landscape themes together: the surroundings of the route, shaped by houses, paths, terraces and dry-stone walls, and the protected area’s forests, waters and rocky terrain.

Religious tradition can also be considered a distinct aspect of a trip. During the Festa di Sant’Anna, held in July at the Abbazia Sant’Anna, a Mass and a procession with the image of the saint take place. The festival adds a time-specific celebratory context to the churches’ architectural and artistic history.

If you are looking for a hotel in Moconesi, first consider which of these themes matters most to your trip planning: the historic route, church history and art, natural habitats or festive tradition. This lets you choose a destination based on specific interests and decide how to balance Moconesi’s different themes.
