Nascio: Bridge, Church and Routes Through Local History
Accommodation in Nascio
Nascio as a Destination for Culture and Outdoor Activities
Nascio brings together several themes that appeal to different travel preferences: historic buildings, local history, and activities in Val Graveglia. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether the bridge and church, the historic center, or a walking route should take priority. Nascio is accessible via the SP26. The town’s history can be traced through individual buildings; the hiking trail extends your view beyond Nascio to Cassagna and Statale. Nascio is therefore especially interesting for a trip that combines culture and outdoor activities.
The Historic Bridge and the Rio Novelli
The historic bridge between Nascio and Cassagna was built in 1766 and connects the two villages. Ponte di Nascio stands 20 meters above a deep gorge in the Rio Novelli. This structure thus brings together two aspects: its function as a link between the villages and its position above the gorge. The year 1766 is a clear reference point for local history; the Rio Novelli adds to the landscape context. The bridge can therefore be understood both as a historic structure and as a connection between Nascio and Cassagna.
The Church and Its Architectural History
The Chiesa dei Santi Maria e Michele Arcangelo was built on the remains of an earlier castle. It has a Greek-cross floor plan and a single-nave layout. The vault depicts the four Evangelists, the Archangel Michael, and the Assumption of Mary. These details highlight different aspects: the earlier building site, the shape of the church, and its imagery. In contrast to the bridge, the church focuses on sacred architecture, while the bridge clearly illustrates the connection between two villages. For those interested in culture, both structures offer different points of interest when planning a trip.
Village Character, Castle and Industrial History
Nascio is an elevated village on the slopes of Monte Bianco, at the foot of a jasper cliff; three sides drop steeply toward the Rio Novelli. According to Tiscornia, a castle stood on the rock of Nascio around the year 1000; it was destroyed in 1033 by order of the Genoese government. The village has a compact historic center with architecturally well-preserved buildings. Examples of traditional local buildings have also been preserved. Near Ponte di Lagoscuro, at the foot of the Rio Novelli gorge, there is a manganese-mining system considered one of the best-preserved examples of its kind. The area’s cultural character thus spans local architecture and castle history through to the industrial use of the area.
Hiking Trail and Canyoning
A hiking trail connects Nascio, Cassagna, and Statale. The section from Cassagna to Statale runs mostly along an unpaved road and passes through extensive chestnut forests. Information about the trail surface and landscape gives you concrete points of reference to assess whether this route suits your preferences. A brochure from the Municipality of Ne and a map are available for the route.
There is also an equipped canyoning route in Val Graveglia near Nascio. It differs considerably from the walking route between the villages: here, canyoning is the focus, while the other route links several settlements. If you are considering Nascio as a destination, you can weigh these different options alongside its historic buildings and village character.
