Bagni Di Stigliano offers travelers two distinct points of interest: the thermal baths and wellness facilities at Terme di Stigliano, and the town’s ancient and later history. When planning a stay, it is worth considering day-use options and services for hotel guests separately.

Wellness, Reservations and Access

The Helius Day Spa at Terme di Stigliano is also open to visitors who are not staying at the hotel. Advance reservations are required. Admission also includes access to the panoramic pools in the thermal baths park. If you are planning a day visit, reservations and the thermal baths park are therefore key considerations: a visit is not tied to an overnight hotel stay, but it is not available without an advance reservation either.

The Olympus wellness center is separate. Access is reserved for hotel guests and is included in the overnight rate. The two facilities therefore have different conditions: Helius Day Spa is also open to outside visitors, while Olympus is tied to a hotel stay. Check reservation options in advance for your planned visit.

Ristorante Il Ninfeo is also open to both hotel guests and outside visitors, but only with an advance reservation. Its cuisine draws on the local area and the character of the seasons. This is a separate consideration when planning: restaurant visits and spa access each have their own reservation requirements, which you should take into account separately.

Thermal Baths and Location

Terme di Stigliano is located in the Riserva Naturale di Monterano. The complex includes the Thermae Stygyane thermal baths. Bagni Di Stigliano thus combines thermal baths with a location in a designated nature reserve.

Roman Traces and Building History

The historic Terme di Stigliano hotel was built in the 18th century by the Altieri princes on the remains of ancient Roman temples. The Botanical Gardens of Stigliano preserve another trace of the history of Roman thermal baths: ruins of Roman baths expanded under Emperor Tiberius remain there. The hotel’s history and the bath ruins thus point to different periods and specific structures.

The ancient site of Bagni di Stigliano includes a sacred precinct with part of a temple and a bath building. Both were accessible via the ancient paved road known as “Selciatella.” A marble tablet dedicated to Apollo was also found in the area of the sanctuary’s temple steps. It is dated to the mid-2nd century AD.

The site’s early use can also be placed within a timeframe, though this is an inference: Bucchero fragments seem to indicate that it was already in use from the 6th century BC. It is thought to have remained in use at least until the 2nd or 3rd century AD, contemporaneously with the neighboring baths. The wording “seem to indicate” is important here: this time span is an archaeological interpretation, not a precise date for each individual structure.
