Anguillara Sabazia on Lake Bracciano
Accommodation in Anguillara Sabazia
Anguillara Sabazia is located in the Bracciano-Martignano Lakes Regional Nature Park. The old town retains its original medieval layout. Lake Bracciano, archaeological evidence, and historic buildings bring several distinct themes together for a stay. You can therefore plan your trip around local history, archaeological finds, activities on the lake, or culinary events.
Old Town and Historic Buildings
The Palazzo Baronale Orsini was built in 1502 on the existing structures of the Palazzo degli Anguillara. Construction was commissioned by Carlo, the son of Gentil Virginio Senior, Lord of Bracciano. The building thus links a specific year to the history of its predecessor structure.
The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta dates back to the 9th century and is an example of Romanesque architecture. Later renovations resulted in a combination of different architectural styles. Inside, you will find frescoes and works of art, including a painting of the Assumption of Mary on the main altar. The present-day church is divided into three naves, with a total of three chapels along the two side aisles. The organ also has a precise historical attribution: Domenico Alari made it in 1792.
Neolithic Finds at Lake Bracciano
The Neolithic village of La Marmotta in Lake Bracciano near Anguillara Sabazia dates from 5750 to 5260 BC. A preserved artifact brings this distant history to life: the Centro Espositivo del Neolitico di Anguillara Sabazia houses a 9.5-meter-long dugout canoe. It was recovered on July 31, 2005, near the hamlet of La Marmotta, at a depth of twelve meters.
The Museo Neolitico opened in October 2006 in the premises of the former agricultural consortium. It displays finds and information panels about the Neolithic village of Anguillara Sabazia. Together, the village, canoe, and exhibition offer different ways to explore the area's early settlement, from the village's dating to a specific archaeological object.
Activities on the Lake and Along the Route
The waters of Lake Bracciano are suitable for sailing, rowing, surfing, and diving. On land, the Sentiero CAI 270, the Ciclovia dei Laghi, begins at the Porta del Parco in Anguillara Sabazia. The route is about 8,000 meters long and can be traveled by mountain bike, on horseback, or on foot. This gives you several ways to get around as you plan your trip. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Festivals and Culinary Traditions
The Sagra del Pesce is held in mid-June and has celebrated fishing as a traditional livelihood for the people of Anguillara on the shores of Lake Bracciano for over 60 years. The highlights are fried Lattarini, served as street food in a traditional paper cone, and the highly prized Coregone. The event thus celebrates fishing while showcasing specific local fish dishes.
Another food event is “Broccoletti in piazza”: it takes place in late March and has been held for 20 years. If you want to plan a trip around one of the festivals, check the dates for the relevant edition. The different times of year—mid-June and late March—can help you plan your trip.
