Cesano combines a medieval-style Borgo with church art, ancient traces and a distinctive landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Cesano, you can explore the area according to your interests: its historic settlement layout, artworks in two churches and a guided nature walk offer different focal points. This will help you decide before your trip which aspects of Cesano interest you most.

Plateau and Medieval Borgo

Cesano is situated on a narrow, elongated plateau at 240 metres above sea level. Two side ravines naturally protect the plateau. The terrain and its protected position go hand in hand: the elevation describes its location, while the ravines explain its natural protection. This landscape perspective complements a closer look at individual buildings and artworks.

In Cesano Borgo, a medieval settlement layout has been preserved, with stone houses along Via Borgo di Sopra, Via Borgo di Sotto and Via dei Tinelli. The three streets and the building material make the character of the place tangible: the focus is not just on a single building, but on a settlement layout with named streets and stone houses. Fragments of the walls of an ancient castellum provide another historical layer. This makes it possible to distinguish the Borgo’s medieval layout from the ancient wall remains as separate historical traces.

Churches and Artworks

The churches add specific artworks to this picture of the area. San Giovanni Battista houses an old wooden crucifix that is said to have been found in the countryside in 1508. Significant fresco fragments have been preserved in the church of San Nicola, possibly dating from the 14th to the 16th century. The two time references serve different purposes: 1508 is part of the reported discovery story of the crucifix; the centuries indicate a possible dating of the frescoes. This is a useful distinction when deciding what to explore: a single sacred object with a reported discovery story or wall paintings with a broader dating range.

Ancient Traces in the Wider Area

Ancient structural remains can also be found outside the churches. Visible sections of Trajan’s Aqueduct are located along paths and side roads near Cesano Borgo, as well as by the Rome–Viterbo railway line near Cesano station. The sections can be seen from the outside; the aqueduct is not set up as a visitor attraction.

In the wider Cesano area, a surviving tower from an ancient settlement dating to the 11th century stands at a viewpoint. The viewpoint overlooks the basin of Lacus Straccia Cappe, which was drained in 1830. These dates refer to different things: the 11th century dates the settlement, while 1830 is the year the basin was drained. The viewpoint and basin offer their own connection to the landscape and history, apart from the Borgo.

Nature Walk and Getting There

The guided nature walk “A Walk Through Space and Time” brings landscape and movement together. It was listed in the “Tesori Naturali” programmes of the Parco Naturale Regionale Bracciano-Martignano for 2023 and 2025 in Cesano. The 2025 edition took place on 13 September: it started in the open pastures of Cesano and continued to the shores of Lake Martignano. The starting landscape and destination are both specified for this edition. If you are interested in this walking event, check the current event dates before your trip.

For rail travellers, Cesano di Roma station is a useful landmark. It has three tracks for passenger services. The lifts operate from 05:00 to 00:00; since operating details can change, check the latest station information before travelling.
