Discover Olevano Romano
Accommodation in Olevano Romano
If you are looking for a hotel in Olevano Romano, you can plan your trip around the landscape, art history, or local wine and festival culture. The town lies on Monte Celeste in a mountain complex formed by the Monti Prenestini, Monti Lepini and Monti Ernici. Its highlights include green spaces and hiking trails, as well as art collections, historic buildings and the DOC Cesanese di Olevano Romano.
Landscape and trails
Parco dell’Acqua Santa is one of Olevano Romano’s main green spaces and offers opportunities for walks and outdoor activities. It adds a focus on the landscape to the town’s cultural attractions. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you can also find specific route recommendations to places of interest.
The municipal circular route recommends walking to the remains of the Cyclopean walls of Olevano Romano. Another recommended route climbs to the Baron’s Tower, which affords views over the Alta Valle del Sacco. The two destinations offer different highlights: the Cyclopean walls focus on historic remains, while the Baron’s Tower offers views of the valley.
A separate route description covers the Cammino di San Tommaso towards Olevano Romano: the trail first descends into the valley, then climbs to the town along a steep paved country road. When planning this section, you may want to take into account the transition from descent to a steep ascent.
Art and history
The Museo Civico d’Arte preserves oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, sketches, etchings and several sculptures. The permanent exhibition includes, among other works, twenty etchings by J. A. Koch from 1810. The collection thus brings together a range of artistic forms, while the dated etchings provide a specific reference to a body of work from the early 19th century. The museum is housed in Villa de Pisa, which is part of the network of historic residences in Lazio.
Chiesa di Santa Maria di Corte also offers a clear historical reference: the church dates from the 13th century and preserves votive frescoes from the 13th to the 16th centuries. At Palazzo Colonna-Marcucci, meanwhile, its location within the Castello di Olevano Romano is central to understanding its setting. Together, these buildings illustrate different historical points of reference, from medieval church art to a palazzo within the castle complex.
North of Olevano Romano, Villa Serpentara stands at the heart of the Serpentara grove. The grove’s oaks, which grow on bare rocks, became a favored and much-studied woodland subject for the Romantics. For those interested in art history, this offers a special link between landscape and artistic observation: not only is the villa notable, but the grove itself also has an established significance as a subject.
Casa Baldi is a former residence dating from 1784 that became a refuge for European artists. Today it is a German cultural center and hosts artist fellowships. This is distinct from the fellowship of the Berlin Academy of Arts: since 1961, the Academy has again awarded a fellowship for a stay in Olevano Romano. These connections make the town’s artistic history tangible from several perspectives, rather than tying it to just one building.
Cesanese and local festivals
The DOC Cesanese di Olevano Romano includes six named wine types: Cesanese di Olevano Romano, Cesanese di Olevano Romano Amabile, Cesanese di Olevano Romano Dolce, Cesanese di Olevano Romano Dolce Frizzante, Cesanese di Olevano Romano Superiore and Cesanese di Olevano Romano Riserva. The production area covers the municipality of Olevano Romano and part of the municipality of Genazzano. The wine designation can therefore be understood in terms of both its types and its geographical boundaries.
At Olevano Romano’s 50th Sagra del Vino Cesanese, a traditional parade of allegorical floats was organized on August 31, 2025. This date refers to the 2025 edition. The feast of San Rocco includes the distribution of blessed bread. For the residents of Olevano Romano, it is a religious and civic festival, with volunteers helping to make it a success. Wine traditions and festivals thus offer different ways to experience local life.
