Subiaco offers cultural and historical attractions ranging from monasteries and medieval buildings to a Roman villa, as well as seasonal activities in the snow and on the water. The highlights below provide specific points of interest.

Monasteries, collections and ancient uses

The Monastery of Santa Scolastica was founded in 520 AD. Its library and museum preserve more than 10,000 manuscripts and early printed works. Saint Benedict lived for three years in an inaccessible mountain cave at the Sacro Speco. The monastery’s foundation, its written collections and the period of Benedict’s life offer different ways to explore Subiaco’s cultural history.

The Museo delle AttivitĂ  Cartarie e della Stampa di Subiaco, or MACS for short, is housed in rooms on the ground floor of the Rocca Abbaziale. It includes one section on the history of book printing and another on the history of paper. Paper and printing therefore stand as subjects in their own right alongside the manuscripts and early printed works at Santa Scolastica.

Section Nucleo A of the Villa di Nerone comprises around twenty rooms used for thermal purposes and probably also as living quarters, a cistern, and an elliptical fish-breeding pond. This part of the villa therefore includes facilities with a range of functions as well as rooms. Its historical focus differs from that of the monastery collections and the paper and printing themes of the MACS.

Medieval quarter and bridge

The Borgo Medievale degli Opifici is considered Subiaco’s oldest and most distinctive quarter. Its townscape is shaped by narrow, winding streets and small squares. The lanes and squares offer a way to experience its historical character, while the monastery and museum highlight other aspects of cultural history.

The Ponte San Francesco in Subiaco is a distinct architectural attraction: a well-preserved, fortified medieval bridge built in 1358 by Abbot Ademaro. Its design, state of preservation and year of construction offer specific points of interest in the town’s medieval architectural history.

Nature, winter sports and rafting

Subiaco is located in the Parco Naturale dei Monti Simbruini. Monte Livata belongs to the municipality of Subiaco; at an altitude of around 1,400 metres, it is home to a ski area divided into two sections and surrounded by beech forests. The Campo dell’Osso ski area offers downhill slopes for all ability levels, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. When planning, it makes a difference whether you are interested in downhill skiing, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Skiing is seasonal; check the latest conditions before your trip.

From spring to autumn, the Centro Sport Fluviali di Subiaco organizes guided rafting trips with experienced guides. As availability may vary by season, it is advisable to check the specific options for your planned travel dates.

Event dates and getting there

The Palio di San Lorenzo is associated with 10 August, while the Festival dei Cortei storici Borgiani takes place in September. Check the current programme for both events before your trip if you want to plan your stay around either date.
