Cervara di Roma is located in the Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park. Its historic center, churches, a museum, signposted trails and mountain cuisine offer a range of starting points for planning a trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Cervara di Roma, you can first consider whether you would like to focus on art and local history, a route with a set course, or local cuisine.

Art and History in the Town Center

The Scalinata degli Artisti is an artistic landmark in the historic center. The Montagna Scolpita di Cervara di Roma is also part of the town’s artistic tradition: it continues the “open-air art” tradition that began in the early 1970s. At that time, many artists created frescoes, mosaics and murals on the façades of houses. The two names thus represent different facets of art in Cervara.

From the town center, the Scalinata della Pace connects the settlement with the remains of the medieval Rocca and is decorated with artistic figures. The Rocca dates from the first half of the 11th century. It was built as a military fortress to defend the area. Those interested in the town’s history will find a tangible link here between a surviving historic building and the artistically designed route leading to it.

Churches and Museum

The Chiesa di Maria SS. della Visitazione stands in the historic center and is built of local stone. The church houses a 17th-century painting depicting the “Visitazione.” On the edge of town is Santa Maria della Portella, an old church dating from 1702. From there, you can look out over the Aniene Valley; above the altar is a statue of the “Madonna col Bambino.”

The Museo della Montagna, Transumanti e Pittori is located beneath the Collegiata di Santa Maria della Visitazione, in the Curia’s old granaries. Exhibits include traditional costumes from Cervara di Roma, coral jewelry, reconstructed living spaces and votive offerings. The collection also includes books, sacred vestments, agricultural tools, livestock-farming equipment, and drawings and reproductions of well-known paintings. The cultural and historical tour includes educational materials in English and Braille.

Nature Park and Trails

Park trail 662 connects Cervara di Roma with the holiday resort of Campaegli. MTB Route 3, by contrast, is a 24.20-kilometer route that starts and ends in the town. The stated destinations and routes therefore differ: the park trail leads to Campaegli, while Cervara is the start and end point of the MTB route. When planning the MTB ride, keep in mind that trail conditions can vary.

To travel from Rome, the road route follows the A24 Roma–L’Aquila and the Vicovaro–Mandela exit. From there, continue along the Via Tiburtina-Valeria (SS5) to Arsoli, then take the provincial panoramic road to Cervara. This sequence of roads provides a practical guide for the journey; no travel time is given.

Observatory and Mountain Cuisine

The Osservatorio Astronomico Claudio del Sole is a public facility in the Parco dei Monti Simbruini. It was inaugurated on July 12, 2008. Sunspots and prominences are observed there during the day; after sunset, the observing program includes planets, constellations and distant galaxies. Visits are listed as available by reservation. Check reservation and opening details in advance if you would like to include the observatory in your travel plans.

Cervara di Roma’s mountain cuisine includes fettuccine with truffles, porcini mushrooms or castrated male goat meat, as well as gnocchi, polenta, strozzapreti and grilled meat. Locally produced pecorino and ricotta complement these dishes. What is offered may vary from one establishment to another.
