Sacrofano lies on the crater rim of the ancient Sacrofano volcano. The area around the town has trails for hikers, cyclists and horse riders. Historic churches, traces of a Jewish quarter and the tradition of the Palio della Stella also shape the town’s history. This offers different ways to plan a stay: trails and landscape, architectural history or recurring festivals.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The Sentiero Monte Sarapollo – La via dello Sport is an approximately 1 km-long, equipped nature trail. It begins at the sports centre car park and ends at the existing trail network connection at Monte Musino. Local trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

The CAI trails also differ in their routes and destinations. The CAI 209a Sacrofano–Casolare 311 begins at the park headquarters, passes Monte Musino into the Macchia di Sacrofano and continues through extensive woodland to Casolare. By contrast, the CAI 209b Sacrofano–Loc. Grottini begins in Loc. Grottini on Via Valle Muricana. Following a forest road at the foot of Monte Musino, it reaches several viewpoints. These route descriptions therefore highlight different points of reference: the woodland section and the viewpoints.

The CAI 209d Monte Musino climbs steeply from Via di Grottini through the forest to the summit of Monte Musino. The CAI 210 Sacrofano–Morlupo offers a different destination: it leads to the Monte Calvio viewpoint at an altitude of 267 m and continues to Casalaccio, where the remains of a monumental Roman cistern are visible. The steep climb, the viewpoints and the visible cistern remains mark different sections of the trail network.

There are also two solfataras in the area around Sacrofano, set within the natural landscape and on private land. One can be reached by a short footpath; the other can only be viewed from a distance because access is difficult. Check access conditions locally.

Churches and Local History

The Church of San Giovanni Battista is Sacrofano’s oldest church. It was built in the 12th century in the historic centre on Via di Mezzo. The Church of San Biagio stands just outside the medieval settlement. More than two centuries of construction preceded its present form, which it took on in 1704. The histories of the two buildings span a church dating from the 12th century and another whose form developed over an extended construction period.

The historic centre is also home to the Jewish quarter. It preserves traces of a Jewish community that was present in Sacrofano from the 15th to the 17th century; only a few material remains are visible today. Palazzo Placidi-Serraggi adds to the picture of the town’s history: the noble residence was built in the early 18th century on the ancient Via di San Biagio in the historic centre.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The Palio della Stella is a historical reenactment held every September. It includes historical costumes and an equestrian tournament between Sacrofano’s seven Contrade. Dates may vary from one edition to the next, so check the specific event dates when planning your trip.

The Feast of Saints Biagio and Geminiano takes place on the third weekend of June and has been celebrated in Sacrofano for more than 70 years. Its central ritual is a solemn procession through the town’s streets. The recurring festival dates and changing individual programmes are separate planning considerations: the weekend provides the timeframe, while details of the programme may vary from year to year.
