Marcellina lies on the edge of the foothills of the Monte Gennaro group. Over a short distance, a steep ascent leads to ridgelines at just over 1,000 metres. For travellers who want to take landscape and cultural heritage into account when choosing a destination, different interests come together here: hikes across a pronounced range of elevations, as well as historical and religious landmarks. The Sentiero Marcellina–Tivoli is a specific hiking route from Marcellina to Tivoli. The area’s cultural character also includes the Criptoportico in the town centre and the art of the church of S. Maria delle Grazie.

Landscape and Natural Environment

The change in elevation shapes the landscape: from the foothills, the terrain climbs over a short distance to the ridgelines of the Monte Gennaro group. Particularly interesting woodland formations and plant communities shape the natural environment along the southern edge of the protected area. The Scarpellata is a deep, steep-sided ravine that provides access to distinctly montane habitats. These border the areas of the Monte Gennaro group.

Wildlife is also part of the landscape of the Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Lucretili: wolves (Canis lupus) are occasionally found in the park’s areas furthest from human disturbance. This refers to the park’s remote areas and adds to the picture of a protected area whose elevations and habitats encompass a range of natural features.

Hiking the Sentiero Marcellina–Tivoli

The Sentiero Marcellina–Tivoli is marked as route 336A and classified EE+ for particularly experienced hikers. The hike from Marcellina to Tivoli takes about four hours. The classification and approximate duration help you assess the difficulty and time required together, but answer different questions. Treat the time as an estimate and check local trail conditions before setting out.

You can also access the trail directly from the visitor centre of the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lucretili. The centre is just outside Marcellina on the provincial road to San Polo, 200 m before the turn-off for Prato Favale. This location helps you find the trailhead, while route marker 336A identifies the trail itself.

Roman Traces and Sacred Art

The Criptoportico in the centre of Marcellina is one example of how today’s rural homes overlap with the remains of Roman rural-residential buildings. Two layers of building history thus meet in the townscape: present-day rural living and Roman architecture.

Another cultural landmark is the church of S. Maria delle Grazie in Marcellina. Its main altar features a restored painting of the Madonna delle Grazie from the 12th century. The church’s fresco decoration was restored in 1977 and is considered an important record of medieval painting in Lazio. The two artworks offer different chronological reference points: the altarpiece is dated to the 12th century, while 1977 is the year the fresco decoration was restored.

Festivals and Regional Specialities

The Festa della Madonna delle Grazie is celebrated in Marcellina on the last Sunday in May. During the festivities, oxen carry the sacred image through the town’s streets. The Festa della Madonna della Ginestra also takes place from late May to early June. The Sagra della Coppietta falls within the same period and includes a tasting of the traditional cured meat speciality.

Another date in the annual calendar is the Festa di Sant’Antonio Abate, held on the first Sunday after 17 January. This winter festival is thus joined by several celebrations at the transition from May to June. If you want to plan your stay around one of these traditions, take note of the dates given for each.

Regional cuisine can also be considered in this wider geographical context: Olio EVO Sabina DOP is produced in the Sabina Romana area, which is connected with Marcellina. While the Sagra della Coppietta includes a tasting of a traditional speciality, olive oil is part of the region’s culinary context.
