Discover Grottaferrata: Abbey, Catacomb and Villas
Accommodation in Grottaferrata
If you are looking for a hotel in Grottaferrata, you can use the town’s cultural and historical attractions as a guide when planning your stay. San Nilo Abbey, the Ad Decimum Catacomb and the villas point to different periods: from the founding of a Greek monastery in 1004 to a late antique cemetery and villa estates dating back to the early modern period. For your planning, it is worth considering these highlights separately: the Abbey is known for its founding history, the Catacomb for its burial evidence, and the villas for their landscaping and paintings.
San Nilo Abbey: a founding year as a point of reference
The Greek Abbey of San Nilo was founded in 1004 by a group of Greek monks from southern Italy, led by Saint Nilo of Rossano. This specific founding year gives the Abbey’s history a clear point of reference in time. This focus also sets it apart from the evidence found in the Catacomb and the villas built later: here, the focus is on a monastic foundation, while elsewhere it is on the use of a cemetery, as well as gardens and paintings.
Ad Decimum Catacomb: passages, funerary art and visiting hours
The Ad Decimum Catacomb was used as a cemetery from the end of the 3rd century to the first half of the 5th century AD. It consists of two barrel-vaulted galleries carved into tuff, branching into smaller side passages and measuring 225 metres in total. Numerous frescoes and funerary inscriptions have survived. The Catacomb can therefore be understood both through its architectural form and through its burial evidence and period of historical use.
The Catacomb is open on Sundays. From April to September, visiting hours are 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm; from October to March, visits are possible from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Check these seasonal hours before you travel so you can plan your visit accordingly.
Villas between landscaping and painting
Villa Cavalletti dates back to the second half of the 16th century. The Parco Monumentale comprises the grounds surrounding the villa, enclosed by clipped hedges and including dense groves of laurel and conifer trees. Alongside the estate’s age, its hedges and trees shape its described character.
At Villa Grazioli, you will find a different focus. It is now used as a hotel and restaurant. Valuable cycles of paintings from the 16th to the 18th century can be seen there, depicting its history. The two villas therefore offer different points of interest: Villa Cavalletti for its historic estate and park, and Villa Grazioli for its paintings and its present-day use as a hotel and restaurant. These offer two different points of connection if you are interested in historic architecture, landscaped green spaces or art.
Festivals, markets and Italian specialties
Events also connect Grottaferrata with San Nilo Abbey. The Fiera Nazionale dell’Artigianato e dell’Enogastronomia has been held in front of the Abbey at the end of March for more than 400 years. More than 200 exhibitors offer a food and drink tour where Italian specialties can be sampled and purchased. Check the specific dates and exhibitor list for the relevant year before your trip.
The patronal feast of San Nilo da Rossano is associated with September 26, the anniversary of the saint’s death. It is accompanied by a large market featuring agricultural, artisanal and gastronomic products. The two events therefore differ in their focus: the Fiera combines crafts and gastronomy in a tasting and shopping tour, while the market held for the patronal feast brings together various product categories.
