Discover Ardea: Culture, Coast and History
Accommodation in Ardea
Ardea brings together art history, archaeological remains and ecclesiastical architectural history with gardens, nature watching and coastal themes. Its varied attractions range from the work of sculptor Giacomo ManzĂą to ancient sites, beaches and local specialities. This offers several different ways to discover the town.
Art and Archaeology
The Museo Giacomo Manzù is an Italian state museum in Ardea dedicated to the sculptor’s work. It opened to the public in 1981 and houses around 500 works, including approximately 100 sculptures and an extensive graphic art collection. The holdings thus bring sculpture and graphic art together under one roof. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm; last admission is at 7:00 pm. Check the opening times before your visit, as they may change.
Castrum Inui is an archaeological site on both banks of the lower course of the Fosso dell’Incastro, along the SS 601. As Ardea’s seaport, the site enabled maritime trade with the outside world, particularly with the Greeks. The oldest area dates from between the 6th and 1st centuries BC. It comprises two temples on either side of a square paved with tuff slabs. The dating and layout of the temples give the site a clearly defined ancient history.
The Oratorio Cristiano Ipogeo also brings together different periods: it was first established in the 2nd century BC as a pagan nymphaeum and used as a Christian place of worship from the 5th century AD onward. Its frescoes belong to the 12th-century Byzantine school. The Church of San Pietro on Ardea’s ancient Rocca has origins dating back to the 9th century; the Church of Santa Marina was built in the 13th century. The Torre di San Lorenzo also combines architectural history with a specific date: the tower was completed in 1570 and is more than 30 metres high.
Gardens, Golf and Nature
The Giardini della Landriana are divided into botanical “rooms,” each defined by a particular botanical feature. Rather than presenting a single, uniform garden, they bring together a variety of botanical themes. Group visits with lunch and guided tours in several languages are available.
Another specific activity is offered by the Golf Club Mare di Roma in Marina di Ardea. Its 9-hole course is laid out on mostly flat terrain around three lakes fed by natural springs. Alongside historical and botanical themes, golf and the course’s distinctive layout are therefore further options to consider when planning a visit.
Colonies of grey herons can be observed along the course of the Incastro River. Such sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. Nature lovers can therefore consider this as a possible addition to Ardea’s cultural and scenic attractions.
Coast and Local Specialities
Tor San Lorenzo is a beach on the coast of Ardea, which is part of the Riviera di Roma. In the 2025 bathing water classification for the Lazio region, Ardea’s waters were rated mostly good, with one area rated excellent. The classification was published on 15 April 2025; such ratings are updated regularly. The Angez Dog Beach, a beach equipped for dogs, is also located on the Tor San Lorenzo seafront at kilometre 22.300. As service details may change, check the latest information before visiting.
Ardea’s local specialities include the Pantano tomato. Boccacce are sweet fried pizzas and another local speciality. Ardea is also part of a wider regional wine-making area: the town lies within the area where Castelli Romani DOC wine is produced. These culinary connections complement the art, history and coastal themes with two distinct local specialities and a regional wine.
