Longone Sabino combines medieval local history and religious festival traditions with the wooded landscape of Alta Sabina. If you are looking for a hotel in Longone Sabino, you can plan your trip around historic sites, a specific festival date, or the regional landscape. The festival dates provide clear reference points; architectural heritage and the landscape offer further themes for understanding the destination.

Medieval Traces and Local Memories

Longone Sabino has medieval origins; traces of walls and buildings from the feudal period have been preserved. The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio di Padova was built in the 17th century. The town's history therefore brings together medieval traces and a sacred building dating from a later period.

The Monumento Attilio Verdirosi commemorates the war volunteer who was born in Longone Sabino on July 1, 1873, and received the Gold Medal for Military Valour. Alongside the architectural heritage, the memorial site brings a specific biography into the town's history. The hamlet of San Silvestro, also within the municipality of Longone Sabino, has preserved the characteristics of a medieval village.

A local tradition associates the Chiesa di Sant'Anna with a spring whose water was considered beneficial. For centuries, women in labour came to Longone Sabino to drink its water. The tradition adds a religious custom and a historical practice to the building's history.

Festival Dates and Regional Cuisine

The Sagra della braciola di pecora is held every year on August 16 and has been organised since 1979. In the village square, about 600 kg of lamb chops and about 120 kg of pasta with lamb-meat sauce are cooked on special grates over a wood fire. August 16 is a fixed annual date for planning your trip; if you are travelling specifically for the Sagra, check the event dates for your travel year.

Longone Sabino celebrates the patron saints Cosmas and Damian on September 26 and 27. The celebrations include a procession illuminated only by candlelight at nightfall. During the festival, large bundles of dried broom are also lit on a nearby hill; these bundles are called Foconi. This gives the two festivals distinct focal points: in August, the food preparation takes centre stage; at the end of September, the procession and the lighting of the Foconi take centre stage.

Longone Sabino lies in a valley of Alta Sabina known for its natural landscape and is surrounded by forests. The town is also located at the foot of the Riserva Naturale del Monte Navegna e Monte Cervia. The wider municipal area has its own geographical setting: the municipality's settlements lie between the Velino and Turano rivers, facing Monte Terminillo.

The Strada del Tartufo e della Castagna della Valle del Turano also passes through Longone Sabino. Its name adds a culinary accent to the description of the town: truffles and chestnuts feature in the route's name.
